00:00.00 Cornpop Welcome back to episode 1 of 4 of a life neurons podcast we're here with our guest Dr Carlton go um Carlton how are you doing not great. Ah yeah. 00:09.25 archpodnet not great, David Not not great but I'm not I'm not a doctor yet almost few more months I mean what do you want to talk about I mean well we'll talk. We'll talk. 00:18.82 Cornpop Do you want to? do you want to talk about it. What would you tell your therapist I'm licensed. 00:25.62 Connor No. 00:26.65 archpodnet I Do believe I talked to my therapist like really quickly last week when I got home I mean I mean I guess we're going to leave the the the ah airport Cartel shooting at or sorry the the airport shooting by the Cartel that I was present at yeah, that will. 00:29.30 Cornpop Truth. 00:39.68 Cornpop Um, the airport traffic sign built problem. 00:45.11 archpodnet We'll put that whole story in when Dr Anderson comes back because we're going to talk about my Cancun trip from the all the beautiful pyramids in the sea turtles I swam with to the cartel hit squad that you know did their job in front of me at the cancun international airport and the stampede that followed. Um, and ah you know two days later I had a job interview like that that turn around from like it was it was like I mean it's been since we did the the Simon Thing 01:03.52 Cornpop Um, what a poem. 01:09.19 Cornpop Um, how are you in times of stress. 01:19.48 archpodnet I mean even the week before we had Simon on I was in Nebraska doing data collection I've been spending mostly the month of March like prepping my radiocarbon samples doing near infrared on the bones. So I can estimate collagen so I know like the right spot and the bones to sample from so that way can increase my success rate. Um, you know so that that helps because like different parts of a bone will have different estimated collagen so that that helps a lot but it it adds like into like another week or two to the process because once you like the whole process of doing that you take a bone you zap it 3 times with near infrared you have to take a photo of it. Where it's been zapped so. There's just a lot of data that you have to keep track of and then once you get the analysis back when you're cutting the samples you have to have like the photo up and yeah, so so um, one of my colleagues. 02:08.74 Cornpop Yeah. 02:09.58 Connor Where are you doing the zappa that or do you have a divilab and and boulder. 02:17.33 archpodnet Ah, Tina Ryder who's a ph d candidate here at si boulder and anthropology. She's bioant she has this mobile near infrared device that she's trained on and so she's done analysis on all the lynch data we did all of my dissertation data. She's done. Analysis on different hominid remains neanderthal remains like so she's trying to build this library not because it doesn't only do collagen it does a bunch of other stuff but 1 of the things it can do is tell you if there is residue like that you couldn't see with the naked eye so like different kinds of like lab material. Which is important if you're also doing dating right? because if you have pva or some sort of glue. It will destroy you will fuck up your sample. Um, so she's the only one to my knowledge who's actually building this database and it also can estimate like it can do a bunch of other stuff. Um, so like we're always happy to like. She does it for free as long as she gets credit and she gets you know the samples you know for her dissertation. So it's a really cool device I was actually talking to Dr um, makey about it a couple weeks ago because they're trying to redate a mammoth at one of those that wyoming has. 03:27.36 Connor Is it? Colby yeah. 03:29.15 archpodnet And every time they send samples I think so it might be Kobe and every time they said samples that they come out bad so I was like hey we have this, we might be able to figure out some better places in the mammoth for you to do it. So I think they're gonna get in touch. You're welcome wyoming shout out. 03:43.82 Cornpop Shout out. 03:47.68 archpodnet Um, so that's that's been like most of my March I actually got the sample sent out today finally because then it was the bag. It was like a bunch of stuff but it's a 3 to four week turnaround time. So I know the month of may is going to be really heavy for my disk. I've been writing it. But it's mostly the background chapters like the theoretical stuff but like the data analysis isn't going to start really till may where I'm going to be doing like a lot of time with Eric Robinson um 04:15.34 Cornpop Fun. 04:15.67 Connor Could you? ah could you explain where you were cutting stuff up where were you like? yeah yeah I want I want this just to be on record of like yeah like ah. 04:20.89 archpodnet Oh my back deck. Yeah, ah. 04:25.26 Cornpop Oh I miss that story. 04:27.95 archpodnet So oh my. So I mean they don't have to be in a sterile environment. It helps. Um, so what happened was is that like no one like there's no fume hood at the anthropology department here at c Boulder. And there's one in a different lab but I didn't have access to it. Dr. Taylor's getting 1 in but it wasn't hit there so at first because the the reason why I need a fume hood is that like I'm using a dremel you know with the saw with a blade and it kicks up so much bone dust you need to fumigate it also like I had like 200 proof ethanol. Sterilize because I have to sterilize equipment between each sample. So you you you don't want to beat it in closed space when I bought it I actually spilled a bunch in my car without knowing it I almost passed out in my fiesta from the fumes was oh man I'm really really lightheaded all of a sudden. 05:09.68 Connor That's that good. Good. 05:20.28 Cornpop Damn it. 05:21.89 archpodnet Like what is that and then like I kind of got that smell of alcohol and I look back and like this fucking gallon bottle of Ethanol is like pouring out in my backseit just it. It just sounds What is that really high proof out like really bad alcohol ever clear. 05:26.65 Cornpop Officer pulls you over. He's like you've been drinking I Smell alcohol. 05:29.92 Connor Um, so. 05:36.47 Cornpop The clear. 05:37.57 Connor Just ever click there. Oh god. 05:40.77 archpodnet Yeah that's what it smells like um but I tried doing at Devin Pedigre's house first because he had a garage but there just wasn't enough space and then I was like I think I can turn my deck into a lab and I did and it was actually I went it went by so quick because I was able to make the space mine and. Um, hammered out I think total 57 samples and you know that was like yeah and so that was a whole process of bagging bla blah blah checking the photographs. Um I was told like Doug told me with the dremel he's like you know you're gonna break bones with it. 06:04.96 Cornpop That's wild man. 06:18.51 archpodnet It's okay and I didn't want to break the bones and then someone told me that there's like this hammer and chisel method and for some reason I thought that was gonna be much safer like the first Scapula I hit with the hammer and chisel it just shattered the entire shoulder blade and I was like oh no and also like when you hammer and chisel that stuff like. 06:33.33 Cornpop Ing. No. 06:35.34 archpodnet You're you're likely to launch objects across the room. Um, and so well the reason why I had done that is at first what had happened was I thought I was only going to be able to get 30 samples for my dissertation based on the funding I got but I was able. Ah yeah, and 3 elk toes. It's mostly by some of the planes in this one site. 06:45.56 Cornpop Was it bison. Okay. 06:53.72 archpodnet That we wanted to date only had elk bones because we're trying to get ams statess and not do charcoal because that's like the whole purpose of my dissertation like our charcoal dates on the planes affected by old woods. So that's why I wanted to Ams dates on bone. Um, ah so mostly bison. Um. 06:58.16 Cornpop You. 07:09.72 archpodnet And the reason why I was trying to use the Hammer Chisel method is originally I thought I can only afford 30 dates but then after talking to ucirvine where I'm sending my samples to there gave me like they're like oh this is the price. Not the price that you're thinking of and I was like oh sweet so I was able to increase my data load from 30 to 57 which is substantial like that's almost doubling what I was able to do um which also doubled the amount of shit I have to do for my dissertation in terms of summaries. Um, wow yeah right? Um, and ah. 07:37.80 Cornpop Point round. Nice. 07:38.90 Connor What woo? yes. 07:47.28 archpodnet So we only had thirty. We only had 40 blades and after like the whole they like hammering chisel method took because then you have to you know you you do that and then you have to sterilize it and I have to wait like 5 minutes for it to dry. Um, so I just said screw it I went to his hardware and I bought like 30 more blades and then with the dremline just zip zip zi. And because you have to exchange the blades after each one too and I got a really nice. Um, yeah so I got a really nice stremel bit that it doesn't I don't have to unscrew it every time I basically like it's like a push and twist. So I could just drop it toss the other blade. Um. 08:09.25 Connor Or that look they'll contaminate it right? and is that the yeah. 08:23.34 archpodnet So yeah, and that was that's been data collection while I'm also writing and then yeah, so we did yeah and there's the whole week I was gone in in Ply Del Carmen came back job interviews. 08:35.90 Connor Could you describe what you see from your your ah back door. So I think I feel like something substantial just happened in the area that you're living in. Yeah well I mean to just like can you see remnants of the fire from your. 08:42.30 Cornpop Yeah. 08:47.16 archpodnet Another fire. 08:53.20 archpodnet So there there's 2 fires now. So yes, the first one in January yeah 2022 has been fucking amazing for me guys. Let me tell you there's the first fire that we got evacuated from yeah that burned that burned down a thousand houses around here. 08:54.63 Connor From your place like. 09:01.78 Connor And let's clap it out. Let's clap it out for 2022 woo 09:05.52 Cornpop Best year on record. 09:11.38 archpodnet Um, then the cartel thing and and then while I was in while I was in Cancun um, Devin Pedigre texts me is like hey there's another fire and I was like dude I'm in. There's nothing I can do about it. Please don't text me about this and there is sure enough. Another fire had started but this one was closer to boulder on air than yes, the cat is in Texas. 09:25.57 Cornpop Your cat was in Texas though right? Okay, cool. 09:31.28 archpodnet Um, um so I wasn't worried about it I was like honestly if it burns down my house with all my data I'm I'm just going to become as I'm just going to be a C person like I'm done. 09:36.44 Cornpop You get more time to write it live and die by the crab you. 09:43.19 Connor Ah, we're going to see Carlton in Tahiti you know living with the polynesians. 09:47.47 archpodnet Yeah, and have just to be a see person. Um. 09:50.18 Cornpop Ah, see person just just so vague. 09:58.23 archpodnet Um, no, not at all. Yeah, that's right? Yeah yeah, ah yeah, but yeah I can't see um. 09:58.81 Connor Ah, that's in the Pawny mythology right? You're you're an oceanic tribe folks right? ah. 10:04.51 Cornpop Ah, see if he he's a phoenician. 10:16.80 archpodnet Yeah, the whole neighborhood north of me is like burnt down dude every time I like drive to boulder. Um, and so like I'm graduating in may right? Well I'm graduating the summer but my ceremonies in May and my mom really wanted me to host like a barbecue for my friends and family which I'm doing and I was like calling. 10:24.93 Cornpop And. 10:33.45 archpodnet Field like for all the parks like with that had barbecue pits and stuff like oh sorry, it's unavailable. So sorry it's unavailable and it took me to like the seventh park. They're like oh yeah, they're all burnt down like what like why isn't anyone told you this like yeah they they were taken out in the marshall fire and I was like you know that makes a ah lot of sense. Um. So I guess we're just holding it at my apartments clubhouse you know because it's like one I don't have to pay for it and 2 I'm tired of trying to you know whatever? what. 10:53.63 Connor Yeah, okay. 11:00.18 Connor That seems like a hard pitch thing right. 11:00.50 Cornpop Reason had it worse Levi or prefer boulder cut that cut that got that doesn't need repeat it. Yeah, it's too stupid. 11:08.45 archpodnet What did you say. 11:11.47 Connor Was it a Ukraine joke. Oh okay. 11:13.55 archpodnet Oh it was yeah. 11:17.71 Cornpop So who got it who had a better live fever bold got that though. Seriously. 11:21.50 archpodnet Boulder absolutely had it better all right? Chris well yeah, we're cutting me I cut back Chris okay, coming back in. Okay. 11:22.56 Connor Jesus okay, wait yeah, okay, well me, let me come mine with a question. Well I think I think that fuck you. 11:28.76 Cornpop Um, Rachel. 11:36.42 Connor Right? I think that's a hard pitch though to like hey can I host this open pit barbecue in this place that just recently burnt down and I just just for like a reference I grew up like ten twenty minutes from where Carlton currently lives in Broomfield. So. Was my backyard. He used to drive ah along that indiana road all the time driveed by the apartments and whatnot. So it's I had a friend friend sister. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, who lived in those same sort of things. 11:58.88 archpodnet Have you been to my new place. It's right next to Indiana oh we talked about this? yeah yeah I turns out one of the fraternity guys from wyoming that I mentored he's in the office his. 12:09.94 Connor Those ah apartments up there. It's It's beautiful up there. 12:18.55 archpodnet Built offices in the office building right? next to my apartment and it was like taking snaps one day and like I saw my apartment that I'm like dude where you at is like home in my office I'm like dude I live in those apartments. He's like what for real and he lives in like Cherry Creek or something like yeah yeah, it is the rna keys ah ben. 12:28.93 Connor Is that the rna keys okay, okay, is it okay Sam or Nick Dan this is okay then oh god that I forget there's like 6 of them. 12:36.62 archpodnet You're completely off. Yeah, there's like four Rna Keys and they're all in signify Ups on wyoming alpha. 12:43.49 Connor I played soccer with these kids. It's a small world. This is random stuff Carlton and I learned about each other. 12:45.88 archpodnet Yeah, yeah, um, yeah I mean other than that it's and then um today I found out that and I'm the co-chair of the community of Native American relations for essays and that's um, not happy, but you know what. 13:00.41 Cornpop Oh. 13:05.34 Connor So what will that involve. 13:05.38 archpodnet So that's that's the thing now. Um, let's just say it was not ah planned that our chair was going to be removed as chair and the resulting fallout. So ah. 13:18.99 Cornpop Did you guys get an email about like being a a volunteer to to sweep the abstracts before they went on. Okay I didn't because I wasn't going because of the debacle last year 13:26.40 archpodnet Oh I did that it was fine. Only had seven and I had to do a session thing. Yeah I mean I did it I think they were due in January so I did it I mean they asked me to I I should put that in my cv I almost forgot. 13:29.11 Connor I didn't. 13:38.21 Cornpop A. 13:45.23 archpodnet Um, and then last week I just got back Saturday from Oklahoma City because I was asked to be ah advisory member for the Oklahoma Public Archeology Network which and a go to goldfield from the dirt podcast. She's one. Um, she's up in Tulsa. So actually they picked me up from my hotel the dirt podcast and we went to the first americans museum where the strategic planning meeting was being hosted. Got to see the museum. Absolutely phenomenal museum and it's really cool. What yeah because a lot of pawnees were actually took. 14:09.97 Cornpop Nice. 14:14.10 Connor Is that the one that ah Matt Reid talked about is that the one that Matt okay. 14:22.63 archpodnet Play like they they were part of the development team. So there's like a lot of pae stuff in there like Zach and Taylor who we had on the podcast that there's like this indian code talker session section and then you could but click different tribes and it's you click ponder and it's Zach and Taylor ah. 14:23.46 Connor Oh gotcha. Okay. 14:36.32 Connor Oh cool. Yeah. 14:38.90 archpodnet You know, just talking it. It's it was like really cool like it's a fun museum. But there's no temporary exhibit now at the moment. So it's mostly like meeting space like there's a lot of open space like community space and then like maybe a quarter of it is actually dedicated to this really cool exhibit. Was really fun and then had the meeting it went it went well in my opinion I kind of felt bad because I was like the only one flown out got my hotel paid for most advisory members didn't come so like people from ou like the ou anthropology department. They're like what are you doing here and I was just like. I don't know I was invited I just got it took the opportunity like well I guess it's serious now Carlton's here and it's like I I guess you know it's like that I kind of felt a little awkward. Um, and then I hung out with Bonnie Piplotto she took me out to dinner with her ph d candidates and chatted with them. Yeah, she's she's tight. Cat. 15:19.51 Cornpop Hurry after. 15:31.50 Cornpop She's so cool. 15:33.71 archpodnet And then like I spent the rest of the evening with um, one of the students Delaney Cooley and we went and checked out. She showed me around downtown. Okay c and we just caught up because we haven't seen each other's since. 15:45.90 Connor Albuquerque. 15:45.88 Cornpop Um, a Q is the stabbings. 15:46.87 archpodnet A q I think no I she was at planes in boulder. But I was too busy. You know running around being host. So I didn't really hang out with anybody especially after Ray and what is this the other Csu grad. 15:50.56 Connor Okay, gotcha. 16:03.31 Connor Ah, kel them. 16:06.49 archpodnet Calden I want to say Chilton for a second. Yeah when rain and Kelton took me out the first night and a lot of yager bomps and that. 16:12.60 Connor I I feel really bad for Delaney because I like the only we like all hung out with her in Albuquerque and she saw us in just like the rarest of forms. 16:20.10 archpodnet A very rare form and then she also saw us at me at the the nuclear museum where I was going all nerdy on Aircraft in the back. Um I sent her an email ah to be a guest I sent like a email blast to a bunch of people. Um. 16:20.18 Cornpop Yeah. 16:27.35 Cornpop That was dope. 16:27.70 Connor But. 16:36.62 Connor Because yeah, we took we took her where we went with her to the is it the New Mexico university new mexico museum and David got that hat right? but that random wolf hat. Ah. 16:38.43 archpodnet So. 16:46.39 Cornpop Cold. Yeah, the wolf that ah get the wos die. 16:47.29 archpodnet Oh yeah, now the hat and there's the there's that Lucy yeah oh my gosh. Oh my gosh. Yeah. 16:55.36 Connor Ah, she she was a witness to all of that which is just just chaos. 16:59.63 archpodnet So she listens to the podcast So like ah she sent me a text the other day when I sent her the invite from the podcast and she's like you didn't you know she is. She's she's been apprehendsed about coming on the show. So delaney I know you're listening to this because you listen to the show. So now you have to come on because we publicly outed you. 17:15.67 Connor Yeah, you have to you have to talk crap about us all that. 17:18.66 archpodnet To talk about your archaic bison research. Yeah. 17:20.91 Cornpop This is delaney. Yeah, um, that was definitely a ah trip. Um, like you were definitely in rare form at that museum I'm trying to. 17:36.99 Connor I was in rare form the first the first night. 17:39.90 Cornpop Can't remember her name. 17:41.31 archpodnet That's the first time I saw the claw. 17:46.50 Cornpop Um, yeah, where I talk about the yeah oh right? you were on muscle relaxers. 17:49.58 archpodnet Come You broke your back. You're in a car accident. 17:52.54 Connor Yeah, yeah, yeah, as um, yeah I got some muscle relaxers. It was wild. 17:56.77 archpodnet That was that was like a month before the first epi 2 episodes appeared because we're coming in on this podcast started in 2019 we're slowly creeping up on our 3 year 18:11.21 Connor Jesus Christ 18:11.60 Cornpop Um, yeah, who who was I dating at that point she said something funny. What the fuck nope ah Liana she I'd center a video of you at. 18:19.10 archpodnet It wasn't Sandy I know that one. Oh that's right. 18:28.54 Cornpop To bc it but she goes yo I do love planes. 18:32.94 Connor Ah I think I think on that beautiful note we're going to end this segment of episode 1 of 4 of a life and ruins podcast and if you think I'm talking for 18 minutes in the next segment you are out of your god Damnn mind.
