00:00.00 Cornpop Welcome back to episode one zero eight of a life I almost said 1 of 8 too 1 ah, one zero eight of a life nerns podcast. We're here with Dr Carlton Shill chief Gober and Connor um, we and got her John and math expert extraordinaire um I had painted carlton a ah like a rock art. Of the pawe flag. Um, and I just put it in a like a little ah you know pouch thing to to travel in and we were wondering like maybe we should put it like in a gift bag or something like that. Um and then Connor and I were like well we can't I can't say this. 00:37.60 archpodnet Yes, yes, a cat. Yes, you can say it. 00:39.30 Cornpop Like I can't we can't We can't wrap it in a blanket and. 00:42.71 mr_ sad There some historical precedents that allows us and to not suggest that we should not put it in a blanket. 00:47.97 archpodnet Oh and. 00:50.40 Cornpop And I felt terrible about that and I was like you know this the Pat history of blankets but then lo and behold at your graduation party. You were gifted a blanket by your indigenous family so I felt better. There's a beautiful blanket. 01:01.11 archpodnet Yeah, yeah, now blanket yeah blanket giving is a huge part of our culture and I got another one the next day my and american indian certificate professional certificate ceremony so is like and the reason why? yeah. 01:13.90 mr_ sad Oh come. 01:13.16 Cornpop Sick. 01:18.15 archpodnet I can only bring some many people and I didn't know that David and Connor were coming um but it was like that whole graduation week was Thursday morning the big ceremony at folks and field at like Eight o'clock I led the whole pre processsion like someone try to cut in front of me like no, no, no, no no because ph ds were first like right after faculty so I like made sure I led the way. Um, and then. 01:34.93 Cornpop Good. 01:35.27 mr_ sad Oh here. 01:37.92 archpodnet Did that did that whole thing and then anthro ceremony and was at four later that day so that's when we did the whole thing and then after that was a small reception and then after that was a secret reception for ph ds with just like the ph ds their family and the faculty and so the first day. Of course was from um, like I had to be on campus at seven o'clock so from 7 to like ten p m and the night before my 2 buddies my high buddies from high school came in Phil flew in Wednesday morning and then Sean and Mike. Caught red eyes and they landed at like 1 a m thursday morning so I had to go get them bring them back. Try to get sleep do that whole day then the next day was um, the museum professional certificate that was from 1 to 4 then came back. 02:15.63 Cornpop Roof. Oh. 02:33.29 archpodnet Had the cookout saw you guys I thought that cookout went really well, there was like three dozen people there? Yeah um, and then that didn't end until like 3 a m for most of us and then at 9 0 a m saturday we had the indigenous ceremony. 02:36.97 Cornpop Um, it was really fun. 02:38.59 mr_ sad Yeah. 02:52.49 archpodnet So like we were running on fumes by that point. Um and like some of us like because we're all 30 you know like it was that realization that you just can't do that anymore and like we did our best but like Saturday was a rough one. 03:06.57 mr_ sad We also like revert to like earlier stages in our life in college where we think we can do these things and you know we certainly can't. 03:11.54 archpodnet Yeah, yeah. Um, yeah, my high school friends. My fraternity brothers like you guys like there were so many stimuli but I didn't get blackout I was I kept I had to be and when you talk to a million people like it's. 03:25.16 Cornpop Yeah, you were you were pretty. There. Dude. Ah, yeah, that that mentally takes it out of you. Yeah I think I had fought ah a. 03:33.40 mr_ sad Yeah, the amount of titos that ok go ahead is the the amount of titos that you guys you went through a whole jug of titos and I have never I I didn't know that was physically possible to go through that in one night 03:34.67 archpodnet Yeah, oh. 03:46.79 archpodnet Because that a bunch of people were taking they were doing half shots. They were filling the shops half with vodka half with lemonade and but they had it they had They had a a lot of people do it So it wasn't like just straightheaded to the face. Um, then like I had that cooler full of really good beer and I kept telling people like hey that cooler is just for me and my friends. 03:51.49 mr_ sad Okay, okay, that makes more sense. 03:51.82 Cornpop Ah. 03:58.93 Cornpop I had like. 04:06.54 archpodnet Here's a cooler for you to put your stuff in so as we got home like all the good beer is gone and I have a cooler full of like shitty seltzers and Coronas basically everyone just like dropped me off their shitty beer and like took all my good stuff. So now I have I guess I have stuff to bring to the field with me. Um, but. 04:16.89 Cornpop Ah, that's good. 04:22.58 mr_ sad Yeah, little those little 21 year old field school students will eat that shit up right out. Oh. 04:26.45 archpodnet Oh they don't get any all for me. 04:30.20 Cornpop Um I think I had like and I always worry because when I come back from sea level I think I'm like either below or at sea level here in Nashville um, when I go out to visit you guys I'm like oh no I'm gonna die I had like 5 claws and like 2 other of those like pineapple margarita. Selzers and then your I was it your aunt or your your cousin ah offered me she was like cheers and then just gave me a shot and I was like all right and then I had another shot I believe I browned out because I wrote a lot of stuff on your whiteboard that probably shouldn' have been written on whiteboard. Ah, but I was like coherent I probably could have driven. 04:51.53 archpodnet Oh sitar. 05:08.80 Cornpop And I was very proud of myself. But I think seltzers just genuinely don't get you as like messed up as beer I guess I don't know. Um. 05:12.65 archpodnet I know so my sister-in-law Sita who is in her 40 s is just any time I go to a party with her. She's the one. She's like the antagonizer she like keeps you going. She's so nice and but like she came back with this so it's like a. 05:13.78 mr_ sad Now. 05:24.20 Cornpop And she seems so sweet about it too. 05:30.44 archpodnet Party full of like upper twenty Year olds lower thirty year olds and then there's my sisterin law who have brought her 21 year old daughter my niece in and just like getting everyone to do shots like pushing them to drake more and everyone's like who is this woman? Ah I love her to death. 05:41.81 mr_ sad Oh my god yeah I will say it was um I know we talked about this before at least David and I did it was really interesting that we Dave and I I feel like immediately got along with your friends like our yeah like our humors like. 05:55.82 Cornpop Yeah I wanted to bring that up too. 06:01.42 mr_ sad We just show up. Um, what what were they watching they were watching g I Joe Jack yeah 06:04.38 Cornpop Like the youtube gi Joe Dubbs and like it takes a specific brain of like person on a spectrum to like enjoy that kind of content and like I was like okay I immediately know that these guys are okay and that's why Carlton is this way. 06:19.33 archpodnet I Yeah they mentioned that they're like dude we got along so well with your podcast friends like no wonder that this is why this happens and I'm like I guess I had do have a certain characteristic friend type. But yeah, no, it's like really cool to see everyone get along and like enjoy each other's time and then like some dude I haven't seen since. 06:22.70 Cornpop Um. 06:36.88 archpodnet Senior graduation turns out like sells houses around here and he saw a bunch of us in 1 place and like rolled up and it was like what's going on. Yeah k rod. 06:43.26 Cornpop Oh was that a like ah poly d okay, yeah, kra that was his name. Yeah, um, yeah, that was cool ah and like ah culturally, it's interesting to me because like I think. It was either a Spongebob joke or something like that like we quoted Sponge Bob definitely South Park and like they immediately across the room like your high school friends like knew that joke and like repeated it back and laughed so it's just like millennials can like completely identify each other just based on 1 very obscure sponge Bob quote. And that is really funny to me as an anthropologist. Oh my god I get gave guest and like he immediately knew like the episode of South Park and we just went off about it. Um, yeah, do, but your your graduation like. 07:18.12 mr_ sad Are you or you do your? um uncle. Yeah, oh man. 07:35.15 Cornpop Ah, your ceremony was awesome because it's like we got to see all of your indigenous family that I still can't figuregger out how Jerry's my friend who Jerry is who's chinese traditionally chinese he has a thousand uncles everyone's his cousin and I also learned that in indigenous culture that is also the same thing like you just you were explaining to me that you just. Call everyone who's not your grandmother but like that a grandmother or like an aunt uncle cousin or whatever. Um, so yeah, it was cool seeing all that and then like friends from your department that were there. Um, and then your friends from high school and then like we know autumn in um, Devin ah so it was just like a cool but ah so I'm getting derailed. But yeah, yeah, like you do a lot of stuff dude and like 1 thing I just talked about most people with that night was how like and you just mentioned it. You went to like 3 different ceremonies for different things. You've been doing you do the podcast you worked at the museum. You almost got cartel hit in Mexico like a week before and like you just do so much stuff and you work so hard and like all of your family was there just like was cool man like you just like it was pretty awesome to see I know. 08:44.89 mr_ sad Yeah, yeah, we're we're super proud of you man. Yeah I was even so proud of you that we we started a fight about how at the end of the night about how how how we influence. Yeah, how and how we influence the podcast and as like no Carlton you do more. 08:48.23 Cornpop Yeah, proud. That's the word I'm going for? yeah. 08:54.31 Cornpop Okay, at the end of that. 09:00.40 archpodnet And out to a snap I remember that. 09:02.30 mr_ sad You're the man you're like no car. No comfort. No you can do more. You're the man. It's like two o'clock in the morning like 2 09:07.50 Cornpop And I came out to the tail end of that and I was like honestly guy like I opened up the door I came out and I caught the tail end of it I was like I know what this is and I was like guys you guys could do the podcast complete without being then you both turned in like finger gesture to be don't even start. 09:08.40 archpodnet Wolf. 09:20.29 mr_ sad You go back. Inside is the turn yet. 09:22.27 archpodnet Who. 09:26.52 Cornpop It was really funny to be. Um, yeah I was trying to herd cats. 09:29.22 archpodnet Yeah, that was that was weird because I was just like there was a part I was just on the deck by myself just kind of reflecting and like 1 by one friends came out and we just like had those drunk chats and I felt like fucking um the godfather. 09:44.89 Cornpop You come to me. 09:45.20 archpodnet In the office I but like a really back version I'm just sitting on a cooler like pulling out ranch water as everyone just comes 1 by one to talk. Yeah, it was fun but no no I I appreciate it like I I love it's fun like I don't see it as hard work. That's what. 09:52.54 mr_ sad Yeah, no. 09:54.50 Cornpop As 1 10:00.69 Cornpop Well, you love it. 10:02.37 archpodnet But there was that realization. Yeah I enjoy it like I had a lot of fun doing all the extra stuff I do so I don't consider it work because it keeps me like activated um in that way. 10:09.83 Cornpop But yeah, dude like you got like like we were all congratulating you like on like I gave that speech about like the podcast and like seeing you grow up and stuff and like ah honestly made be kind of emotional when you're talking about your your stepdad like I was like damn and like your mom like he was crying. Um I could tell you were trying to. 10:16.54 mr_ sad Um. 10:29.16 Cornpop Ah, trying to not I should say and then like your indigenous family like giving you like the blanket and stuff and like I know it was just like really cool to see like every aspect of your life like how proud of them How proud of you they are yeah. 10:38.66 archpodnet I yeah I wasn't expecting speeches I thought we were just go do cakes. So I really didn't have anything prepared and I just tried to like not ramble on too much but no dude it was it was cool to see and the gifts I got because I got the I got that blanket and then my other brother Phil the one that gave the speech. He gave me um, an eagle feather. And some medicine and so that was like really cool to get and that was like it was a fun time. It was a fun time and I'm surprised like we didn't tear the place up like right around right before ten o'clock when we had to dip out. We had everything put away brock brought back up to the apartment the next day my neighbors came up. 11:06.89 Cornpop Amen. 11:13.51 Cornpop Yeah, it was quick. 11:17.17 archpodnet Didn't say anything about the party but like I guess I'd left a cooler um drain open they're like hey it's dripping. So um, this morning I left a gift card $100 gift card to Starbucks for my neighbor downstairs I'm like hey I'm sorry about Friday night I just got my ph d. 11:33.90 Cornpop Whoa. 11:36.41 archpodnet So I had all my friends' family here. Thank you for being chill about it I know you have a new kid and you could use this gift card caffeinate the baby. 11:44.16 Cornpop Caffeinate that baby dude. 11:44.44 mr_ sad You I don't think you can do that you straight you can't you can't you can't do that to the baby and this but but but that shows your kindness Carlton and your care for other people and we appreciate that about you also I know why your set that hated me. 11:49.98 Cornpop Ah. 11:56.29 Cornpop Yeah, um, be. 12:03.21 mr_ sad Because ah he was part of the state department he knew I was doing the legal stuff. Yeah oh Dom corone no ah Nasa guy. 12:06.60 Cornpop Except I was a cool dude. Um. 12:07.52 archpodnet Yeah, here is oh you guys got to see dawn again. We haven't seen dawn since since before the covid days my yeah Nasa guy my first roommate. Yeah. 12:13.96 Cornpop Who was done Oh right? Yeah, he was there for a bit. Yeah. 12:20.82 mr_ sad That was so funny that oh my god so like Carlton so Carlton's down hanging out with us right now. He's running off doing something else and this guy just walks up. He's got a hat on. You know you just he just looks like so. 12:25.92 Cornpop So. 12:38.71 mr_ sad This a boulder bro and he's like comes up to he. He just makes eye contact with me I don't think there was any like recognition in his face or anything at all. He just walks out to me. He's like ah Carlton around here. He's like yeah I hope he's ah he's back up there. You know, nice meet you. It's like I'm I'm Conor. He's like I'm done. He's like. 12:39.90 Cornpop He does. Yeah. 12:57.19 Cornpop That. 12:58.24 mr_ sad Oh oh so I don't if we've mentioned this on the podcast but we it was the night we this? yeah and this is the night we recorded. Ah yeah. 13:07.87 Cornpop Ah, this is pre covid. 13:11.20 archpodnet This is like a month before Covid This is like the last time. Yeah. 13:12.90 Cornpop Yeah, remember being sketched at the airport because like some people were in masks and I was like oh um, anyway Connor you can tell it I can tell another angle. 13:24.46 mr_ sad We've we film? Yeah know so we were filming what it. What do we film. We did a review of Alpha that we never produced anywhere because we just got obliterated and then we were we also did ah Instagram live where ah and it. 13:29.56 Cornpop Um, yeah, ah. 13:39.78 mr_ sad By us starting to take shots so that's where the night yeah Yeah, that that's where the night was going and then ah Don shows up later after those those activities keep keep continuing um, less so on social media. 13:40.96 Cornpop Yes, it did um and I took an edible. 13:42.90 archpodnet So yeah. 13:59.64 mr_ sad More so just in the sadness that is my life. Um, we order pizza. Um. 14:03.28 archpodnet we we had we had a fifty two inch cosmos pizza like the fig is as big as a volkswagen bug like it was the biggest pizza known demand. 14:08.83 mr_ sad Ah. 14:12.10 Cornpop Oh my god yeah I forgot about that and I had just done like six months like pure gluten freee and you guys like eate this pizza and I was like hey and know they didn't add to like the help of the night um but yeah cotter got ah 1 ge got a little little not sober. 14:28.77 mr_ sad Yeah, yeah. 14:31.98 Cornpop Ah, and your roommate came in and you as I don't know now Konor I don't know if you're want me to tell a story. You can tell what you want. 14:42.79 mr_ sad Let's just say I made a big fuss and was leaning back in a chair and just fell on my ass and was just like just a mess I was just a mess. It was a these these got screen. 14:53.50 archpodnet I what was it wasn't anything anything too bad like I forget what Don's ex-girlfriend came up somehow because I think something just happened and you're just like you're just like yeah and so you're just like giving him supportive comments. You're just like. 15:01.89 Cornpop Yes, this is what I remember. 15:04.94 mr_ sad And I don't remember this. 15:09.10 archpodnet No dude, you're way better than her and just like you just and he you didn't even you just met the guy. You're just like no no, no fuck her dude and then immediately you just like lead back in the chair and you just like fall over just smack your bed on the back of the concrete and we're like oh god and Don's like is he okay and I'm like I think so like we're gonna get him to bed. 15:22.66 Cornpop And what I remember was like you saying like he he was like no I think you're a great guy dude and you're like no I'm not I'm I'm terrible and then like it was just so like self de like to us. It's like funny because that's our humor. But then Don just like looked at me and Carlton so concerned you were just like Ah yeah anyway. 15:43.84 archpodnet Yeah, Carter was super yeah self-deprecating. 15:44.19 mr_ sad He's like what is this guy so well, that's that's how my my humor goes especially about a drink. It's like I'm I'm happy intense All of these things mixed together in this lovely sort of way. 15:54.71 archpodnet I Well but alcohol is a depressant. So I mean I. 15:59.95 Cornpop Yeah anyway, um I am reminded every time and not specifically you guys but just archaeologists in general when I hang out around them again I'm like oh yeah, this is definitely a culture of drinking. Um, which yeah. 16:00.78 mr_ sad Yeah. 16:16.98 mr_ sad Alcoholics with an archeology problem. 16:19.70 Cornpop And like my high school friends like aren't like they'll drink and stuff but I like put them like when I hang out with my archeology friends I'm like okay I gotta like let me drink a beer before I fly out because I gotta get I got get used to this again. Ah um, this is probably really depressing for the audience. Um, Anyway, we can stop talking about all this. Ah. We What else happened that day and none of that matters. But I Guess the the main thing was we did that experiment. Um, which we might as well start in the next segment I guess but I'm brain farting. 16:47.37 archpodnet Yeah, yeah, no absolutely I think yeah, we'll we'll actually talk about archeology here in the in the next segment. Um, and yes, we'll be right back with episode 1 on 8 of a life and I said 1 of 8 2 damn it 108 of a life rooms podcast.
