00:01.55 archpodnet Welcome to episode one thirty seven of a life ruins podcast re investigatstige the careers of those living a life in ruins I did that wrong. What am I supposed to worry. Ah. 00:09.18 Webby I did that wrong. Yeah, he did it was like all 1 word. 00:11.16 disappointment Or we. 00:17.71 archpodnet Okay I would we do that a good just leave David it see this is where I'd say like Rachel edited out but you're right here? Um I know welcome to episode godd tip it. 00:23.75 Webby Like um. 00:26.37 Rachel Ah, and you know we're going to leave all this in. So. 00:32.00 archpodnet Welcome to episode one thirty seven of a life ruins podcast rein investigatste the careers of those living a life in ruins I'm your hosts Carlton Gobert I am joined by my co-host David Howe and Connor Johnn it is that time of the year ladies gentlemen Apache attack helicopters apache attack helicopters that's the word. Um, it is our annual performance review by our archaeology podcast network overlords Wrangler of Ape Of Archaeology Podcast Network Monkeys I meant to say life and ruins this is the adderall that I recently got prescribed that I'm still. Coping with right now and that's where all this nightmare is coming from. Um it is Chris Webster and Rachel Rhoden you 2 thank you so much for coming onto the show. Um I'm really happy that we've kind of continued this tradition. 01:11.14 Webby Coming. 01:12.76 Kanye West Now you get it. 01:26.50 archpodnet Of having at least 1 of you present Chris you've been here all 4 years at this point right? and Rachel this is your second time you miss the first and third but now now we're back. Um, so with that being said Rachel since we haven't seen you in quite some time. How have you been in 2022 so 01:28.57 Webby Been here all? Yep yeah think so second. 01:35.64 Rachel Yep. 01:44.88 Rachel I'm pretty good I mean just doing my thing editing some podcasts here and there doing some archeology but more tangently to archeology rather than actual archeology. So let's. That's my thing. That's what I'm doing. 01:59.74 archpodnet Good and good stuff. Well awesome and what about you Chris how have you been. 02:02.15 Webby Ah. 02:07.39 Webby Well, ah you know my workload just continues to increase in the first 1 minute and 15 seconds of this show I counted at least 15 edits I got to do so um unless unless Rachel doesn't so yeah, no otherwise yeah. 02:14.75 Kanye West Ah I. 02:17.12 Rachel Ah, yeah, we kind of switch off, you never know which of us is going to edit the the show. So. 02:24.90 Webby You know, aside from that it's been. It's been a ah busy busy year as usual. 02:24.16 Kanye West So um. 02:28.45 Kanye West Where are you guys at right now. 02:31.11 Webby So we're in Charlotte North Carolina it's where Rachel's family is from and I can let her tell you a little bit about where we're at. 02:38.34 Rachel Yeah I mean I just grew up here and my family all still lives here and since we live in an rv and we can go anywhere we want whenever we want because we also work remotely and you know just need internet which was actually kind of difficult for the last couple weeks but now we're in a pretty good situation. We can. 02:52.81 Webby Yeah, yeah. 02:57.54 Rachel Just be here for the holidays every year and I get to play with my nieces and nephew and it's super fun. 03:02.60 Kanye West Nice. 03:04.34 archpodnet So how long have you guys been doing the ah Rv Gig at this point for. 03:04.42 Webby Ah. 03:09.64 Webby It's two and a half years at this point we started in June of 2020 with our first. Ah rv and now we're on our second rv and halfway through our third year so 03:17.70 Rachel Um, yeah, it was kind of pandemic related but it was sort of like the circumstances just sort of came together because I had I left my full time job literally like. 03:18.60 Kanye West Go. 03:30.12 Rachel Three weeks before the pandemic started all we knew when I decided to leave my job like all we knew was that people were getting sick in China and that was that and but then the world shut down and I had already quit my job which would have become remote which would have been amazing I probably would have stayed at my job but that's all right. 03:36.31 Webby Yeah, but and. 03:48.66 Rachel We hit the road. We bought that. Ah Rv that just worked out for us and and I think it was the right decision for sure to do this instead. 03:55.10 Webby Yeah, yeah for sure and we've been. 03:56.40 disappointment To when it when did when you guys get the bigger one because I know you kind of had like a this is mock 2 or version 2 of the. 03:56.64 Kanye West And. 04:01.70 Webby Well well, it's and David you've seen it. Do you saw the first one that we had and and this one is actually the the new one we got just this last september and it's actually ten inches shorter than the first one. But. 04:03.80 Kanye West You guys have a mansion. Okay. Yeah, it's better than my house. I. 04:10.79 Rachel Yeah. 04:20.64 Webby So it's thirty five feet and like four inches or five inches or something but it's it's much bigger inside because ah, you know if you's ever seen a class a rv it's got slides. Well the slides in the living room go out like an extra foot and a half on both sides and we've got 2 slides in the back versus 1 slide so that allows us to have. 04:20.96 Rachel Um. 04:38.88 Webby In a shorter space that allows us to have a king-sized bed in the back in a washer and dryer and um, you know we've got all the more space. All the comforts at home and this one's a 2022 as well. So it's got the updated like technology and and all that stuff. So it's ah it's fancier than our car. So that's you know. 04:40.69 Rachel More space more. 04:57.12 Webby Not really saying a whole lot. We have afford cmax at the moment hopefully that'll change soon. But yeah, yeah, it's 1 of the reasons we upgraded because we we move to a diesel so we've got a £10000 towing capacity as as opposed to 5 now. So now we can get something a little bigger. Yeah yeah. 04:57.95 Rachel Yeah, the the car's not amazing. Yeah. 05:08.80 Rachel Yeah, yeah, we really want something we can go off road. Yeah. 05:09.48 disappointment The cool thing about Diesaws as I say the cool thing about diesels. It's so cheap right now it's. 05:15.10 Kanye West Yeah, but got marooned. 05:16.20 Rachel It is better. You know we switched out our. 05:16.23 Webby Oh Jesus yeah, you know we we switched out our vs from a gas at our RV right when gas started getting down to $3 and less I'm like come on. Yeah yeah, yeah, we were're getting almost eight nine hundred out of a. 05:24.26 Rachel Yeah, yeah, but the gas mileage is way better. So yeah. 05:35.63 Webby Nine hundred miles almost a thousand miles out of a tank of gas that's a hundred gallons so it's still only about 10 to maybe twelve miles to the gallon depending on what altitude we're at, but it's better than the 6 or 7 we were getting with the other rv yeah. 05:37.18 Kanye West Wow. 05:39.40 Rachel Um, yeah. 05:45.31 Rachel Um, yeah, neither of which sounds great. Yeah yeah. 05:46.32 Kanye West You can hold a hundred gallons oh sorry that's wild I get 30 or I think I think it's like 40 Maybe yeah I like put it this way from Cheyenne to laremy I had to fill up so it's like it doesn't. 05:48.90 Webby Yeah, yeah, we have a hundred gallons yeah Forty gallon tank in your in your bus. 06:05.71 Kanye West Work. Well um I also just want to stay for the record I got a Zoom invite today saying that we had a performance review and I was like oh that's weird. we' never had 1 of those so I logged in ready to do it and then Connor was like we're on Zencastr and I was like that's weird my easier to easier to do I guess. 06:05.99 Rachel Ah. 06:17.60 Rachel Are. 06:25.16 Kanye West And then I ho John recording a 3 segment episode. Ah nice took a painkiller so prescribed one. So ah yeah, this is this is a fun surprise. 06:38.29 disappointment And we did have a conversation. 06:38.56 Rachel that would be Chris Iss that would be Chris's dumb scheduling to system thing with his calendar. It sends out a Zoom invite whether you like it or not. 06:40.30 Webby Ah. 06:45.40 Webby It it. That's true. 06:48.19 Kanye West I Just need to be smarter. It's I think the moral of the story. 06:51.17 disappointment We we did have a conversation with David under he might have been the under the influence of some sort of pain killer but we did have a conversation where we established that this was going to be the thing we do every year. 06:58.81 Rachel See. 07:00.49 Webby Ah, yeah, yeah. 07:02.37 Kanye West Apparently I told the nurse my name was timothy so anything was possible. 07:07.30 Webby Nice, nice I do I like doing these I appreciate it and it makes me actually want to I don't know about do it on a podcast episode because you guys have kind of the only show that this is appropriate to have an episode about for you know that's it. It just fits. But. 07:14.67 Rachel Ah I. 07:26.80 Webby It makes me want to do this type of interaction with ah with all the podcast hosts at least once a year you know, just ah, just a check in because I mean there's with all this being virtual there's there's hosts of course that I've never met. Um I've been working with them for a long time and I've never met them. And so the only time we get to interact is on you know, random slack conversations. But normally it's just like audio comes in we process it and kick it back out and and that's pretty much it. You know we don't have to talk to anybody but it would be nice to have that facetime I guess a little bit and keep that going. 07:55.54 archpodnet Are you guys going to essays this spring. 08:00.69 Webby You know it's not in the cards for us right now. It's not in the works and if ah, anybody listening to this happened to hear an episode of the Sierra Mark Podcast in the last couple of months we had something about professional organizations and. Ah, kind of went on a rant and bill white did too. We're we're kind of getting a little bit disenfranchised with the whole with the big the big organizations it's fun to go see people don't get me wrong. You know it's fun to go there and and hang out but that's almost literally all they're providing you and for the thousands of dollars it takes to get there I feel like we could do better. And we can do something else which is why we're trying to try to kick something up on the apn and culturo side of things and you know make it a little more meaningful if I want to go meet up with a bunch of people we live in an rv we'll just travel around the country and meet people. But you know, ah, yeah, so the short answer to that is no I don't think we are um. And ah and I don't know if we're going to be going to 1 in the foreseeable future. We were going to go to lisbon too for shs but just kind of backed out on that for other plants. It just just didn't seem logistically worth it to be honest, they don't they don't make it worth it. So yeah, that's where we're at with that not to bring it down Carlton. 09:02.79 Rachel See. 09:09.34 archpodnet Damn I'll be a lisvin I think it's worth it. 09:10.34 disappointment No I mean it's been well documented. Yeah well you you got professor money right? and you get you get paid to go over and do that stuff So I don't I don't want to I don't want to hear it. 09:11.33 Webby Academic. 09:22.21 archpodnet I Do I do that is true I'm just not coming out of ah. 09:23.30 Rachel Where is it at next year oh 09:25.78 Webby Next year Portland yeah. 09:28.30 Kanye West I Ah Portland me dye my hair blue and knock some statues over really excited essay is yeah ah yeah. 09:31.52 archpodnet Are we talking about essay Chase or aas. Oh yeah, oh that's right. 09:33.66 disappointment As Aas we got to figure out what block we're going to take over. 09:34.37 Webby Ah, essay is in Portland. Yeah yeah, no, ah oh my god yeah. 09:36.60 Rachel Yeah, he. 09:45.36 Kanye West Ah, very good. 09:46.69 archpodnet Fair enough but um, kind of moving this back into ah to an archeology and podcast related. Um, kind of topic and for those that have listened to these reviews before you know that we'd actually don't get into much archeological. Literature or anything here. We really just kind of talk about like really an annual performance review of like what has the apn been doing this past year well how has life and ruins been doing this past year but the apn has seen some new podcasts come to the network. So. 10:04.29 Webby Yeah, yeah. 10:16.25 Webby Yeah, so and yes, so this year I think there's I think there's 2 new ones in 1 reboot if I'm not mistaken I have to think about it but 1 of the ones was. 10:19.56 archpodnet Who have you guys brought into to the fold of. 10:34.56 Webby I think that was this year um flip side and think she started at the beginning of the year and and her name is Leah um, tilly who who hosts that she actually started the podcast and then had some health issues of her own and had to kind of bail on it for a few months and then she's slowly coming back to it but she. Her podcast when she really gets it going again. She's only a few episodes in and it's monthly. But it's supposed to be looking at events in history and then talking to people about what we don't know about those events in history right? That's kind of where it is the the flip side of the event if you will. That's where she gets the name. So. Um, taking the taking the stuff that we really know and and kind of looking underneath that and and digging into it a little bit and then there's t break time travel by Matilda Cbret who is also our mcc if you will for theulturo share events which we may talk about later. But she's helping set those up and ran our first one back in November but she also runs a podcast called the tbrake time travel and um I can remember where Instagram is but her Instagram started from that I think it's called tbreak archaeology if I'm not mistaken, but she started that and does like this weekly Instagram reel kind of thing archaeologist teacup. That's right? yeah. 11:37.57 Kanye West The Archaeologists teacup. 11:43.41 Webby And yeah because David was a guest on her ah on her show on one of the episodes. 11:45.63 Kanye West And yeah I told her at the end of it too. She well in the beginning she said she was nervous because she'd only done a few but like she was a wonderful interviewer like asked great questions stayed on topic like it was one of my favorite that I've done. Yeah. 11:52.79 Webby Yeah. Yeah, and I like I like her show too. She's she's very conversational. She's very comfortable. She doesn't seem Nervous. You know some people while they may be nervous. They they like act nervous and she doesn't seem nervous and it it doesn't come through the show. So. 11:57.60 Rachel Cool like a show. 12:13.49 Webby And she's got experience enough to to have a dialogue about most things. so so I think I just posted her episode 7 which will be out as we're recording this. It'll be out in like a week and a half but as you're listening to this. It's already out her episodes are monthly as well and then we rebooted the pseudoarcheology podcast. It's been. On hiatus for about four or five years now it was started originally by Sarah Head who has the archeology fantasies persona on line and Sarah the archaeology fantasies podcast all about pseudoareology was the one of the first 3 I see we we we started with 4 podcasts when we started the apn a little over eight years ago 12:33.38 Rachel Sorry. 12:52.17 Webby And it was 4 4 shows and archeological fantasies was one of the shows and ah eventually she wanted to take her brand in other directions and she took her show off the apn. But as per our agreement we left the feed live and changed the name so she could take the name with her because that was her brand and Dr Andrew Kinkella who is a host of the Sierra Mark Podcast took over the feed and has now put out I think I think probably close to 10 episodes at this point and it's just him right now. He's got a lot to say and he's doing you know somewhat shorter episodes still 3 segment format but it's just it's him talking about pseudo archeology. 13:19.40 Rachel Yeah, there's no one to say short. So. 13:27.87 Rachel Yeah, his show is fun because he'll do like an episode of a a personal experience that he's had with something kind of Pseudo related and then he'll do like a deep dive research episode about something in the the Pseudo world and just kind of break it down and he does a really good job of. 13:45.65 Webby Ah. 13:47.31 Rachel Of um I guess like describing that stuff from a in a way that is fun and entertaining too. I wait I need a little bit like fun and entertainment I like editing his podcast a lot. It's good. Oh my God ah. 13:53.64 Webby Way that yeah like your but. 14:00.59 archpodnet Are we ever going to get more of historical yarns or is that show just ah bare as it as it is is the thread bare At this point. 14:02.82 disappointment Is that history hey. 14:09.00 Webby Um. 14:09.45 Rachel I mean I totally would do it I just I lost my co-host number one. She's just way too busy with kids and she and I her name's Heather Heather Boyd she and I had like such great chemistry and I just can't think of anybody else who I would want to do that with I mean Chris and I obviously we do our podcast together the archeology show and like we're. Great chatting together but he doesn't know it. You don't know anything about yarn or fiber. You know what I tell you and I don't really think you're that interested in learning about it either. So. 14:34.63 Webby I I know way more than I feel I should but not enough to co-host the podcast. But. 14:44.20 Rachel Ah I mean we could take the teaching format where I teach you about things. But then again I'm not really an expert either I Just enjoy it and I like to learn about it. So I don't know it's It's on hiatus for the moment we'll see if I ever go back to it. 14:49.45 Webby I. 14:57.69 disappointment I I wanted to ask you guys. So we we normally get stats from you every every month showing how well we did and again you only got like what 2020 podcasts editor whatever you know, whatever. Um. 15:02.63 Webby What yeah when I don't suck at that. 15:09.57 Kanye West I Mean what can you do. 15:11.20 Webby Yeah. 15:11.85 Rachel Ah. 15:14.13 disappointment But it's it's been really impressive the rise of the archeology show like it. It is like it's like Meteoric like could you talk about what where that came from and where it's. 15:24.31 Webby Well ah, here comes there comes. Ah yeah, it's a. 15:26.16 Rachel Um, well, there's a clear reason why that's happened Chris did you want to you know, share what that reason is ah. 15:34.69 Webby Ah, you know I just decided to have a better personality. So I changed my entire being and people really latched onto that ah had nothing to do with Rachel joining the show. So yeah. 15:44.17 Rachel Ah, ah, honestly I think we just got more consistent with it. We got a more consistent format and we started um, focusing on things that were happening in the news and kind of in pop culture too and I think all of those things just helped us. Reach a larger audience. Basically. 16:03.90 Webby The the crazy thing is and it's a little bit of a lesson for people growing a podcast is we we haven't done anything different with that show than any of the other shows right? We we don't we're shit at social media just like we are with ah the whole Apn right? We don't really even promote this show. 16:16.41 Rachel Um, fair. 16:19.50 Webby Ah, in in any separate way from just stuff that's promoted on the apn and I don't know I think it just like Rachel said I think it just hit a struck a chord and when your audience starts sharing the episodes which must be happening for growth. The only thing I can imagine then then that goes the other thing that. Could be doing it is I intentionally named the show and I first started it and it had a very different format like five years ago I intentionally named it the archeology show so it could be incredibly searchable and you know somebody types archeology into a podcast player. It should show up right away. So I think that's probably helping but it it didn't help right away. We didn't have those kind of numbers when we first started the show when I was with April and then doing other things. But again Rachel mentioned the consistency we were just we weren't we weren't doing it enough and we we went when we went to weekly and kept it that way. Um, the numbers really started to climb. So. 17:04.31 Rachel Aren't doing it. 17:09.30 disappointment I Did I did a relief. 17:09.22 archpodnet Whatever happened to the I dig it podcast Sorry I don't mean to cut in. But. 17:13.18 Rachel A. 17:13.44 Webby Yeah, they I was wondering that myself they went on hiatus they said they were going to because they were 2 students and they were both one was going to grad school and the other one I'm not sure what she was doing and then. 17:22.58 archpodnet All it must have been hard to run a podcast while you're in graduate school. Yeah. 17:23.70 Kanye West Yeah, yeah. 17:28.51 Webby Yeah, yeah. 17:29.40 Rachel Ah, you guys don't know anything about that. Do you just curious. 17:30.48 Kanye West I was about to say that but not facetiously and I forgot you just went through all of it and. 17:33.12 disappointment Yeah, and Carlton is a freak so I don't want to hear from you. How many organizations are you. 17:38.55 Webby And now they ah ah. 17:40.40 archpodnet I I run off of spite and depression. Yeah. 17:46.41 Webby Honestly I think they just they just lost the feel for it to be honest and and you know just didn't want to do it anymore. I don't think they're doing anything else I think they were honest with me and that they just didn't want to do the podcast anymore because I they actually goes to me completely and I tried hit reaching out to him on slack and um I have eventually got them on their. Because I was on their Discord channel they had for the show and that discord just like keeps going. There's people there that are continuing to have discussions over there apparently and I don't even know if they're in it anymore but they started this thing for the show and then there's just people there and um, that's when I eventually got a hold of them and they're like yeah we're not going to do it anymore like all right? whatever. 18:20.37 Rachel I mean podcasts are just a lot and I don't think you know how a lot it is until you do one and then it's a choice like do you want to keep doing this thing that takes up way more of your time than you ever thought it would and that's cool if you don't want to do it. 18:21.24 Webby It happens. 18:36.10 Webby Yeah. 18:37.60 Kanye West I Yeah and there's just you know so many like everyone on their uncle has a podcast now too and my friends will be like dude I was listening to this pod. You should check this one out dude like every day and like I can't physically listen to this many podcast. 18:38.56 Rachel Get it. 18:43.50 Rachel Yeah. 18:50.50 Rachel I I like it's just too much I don't even listen to anything other than podcasts when I'm listening to things now and I so I still can't get caught up on the ones that I I want to listen to So it's it's almost overwhelming. 18:59.27 Webby Yeah. 19:02.81 Kanye West Yeah, yeah, there's ah, there's a lot. Um I had a point with that. But yes, it's just like you know to keep doing one.. It's probably. And especially when you're like just Starting. It's probably a lot. 19:18.93 disappointment Even if you're like 2 years in and decide to take like you know like a through two month hiatus you know it's it can be at the beginning. It can be in the middle. It can be at any point you know. 19:20.47 Webby Ah. 19:26.13 Kanye West What can you do? Yeah are you guys on Starlink Oh are you go. 19:26.93 Rachel Um. 19:27.55 Webby Maybe a. 19:31.60 archpodnet Fair enough and on the. 19:34.57 Webby And yeah Mr. Burke. 19:37.38 archpodnet And on that note, we'll return to episode 1 3 7 here for annual per and on that note, we'll be right back with guests Chris Webster and Rachel Roden here on episode 1 3 7 of a life and roads podcast.
