00:01.30 archaeoteacup Hi you're listening to episode 11 of and my trial where we look at the fantastic side of archeology and the archeological side of fantasy I'm tilly and today is gonna be a little bit different. Um, we don't necessarily have a quest. We just thought you know it's the end of january. 00:08.45 Ashleigh Airey An imash. 00:19.75 archaeoteacup First month of the new year has gone by and we just have a little bit of a chat about things and tell you all what's happening in the new year so first of all, how was how was your new year and everything ash was it nice always is it really is. 00:31.75 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, it was actually um I was tiring was all I think it is that always is but it was good. 00:40.34 archaeoteacup You always feel like yeah and in the new year I'm gonna be refreshed and have get so much stuff done and then it's like oh no, no, no yeah, ah it was good. It was good. It was you know the classic everyone got sick and and. 00:43.50 Ashleigh Airey No I need another two weeks off thank you yes how about you was it good for you. 00:57.95 archaeoteacup But yeah, it was fun I went and visited my parents and that's always nice and yeah, so no, it was good and yeah I managed to read a bit which is always nice for me because at the moment I'm really struggling to get into reading um and things like that. But and I'm trying to remember if I read any. 01:06.55 Ashleigh Airey Oh. 01:16.86 archaeoteacup Fantasy. Actually what did I read? Yes I did I did read fantasy I read um Emily Wild's Encyclopedia of fairies. It's It's a good one I Really enjoyed it. Um, and I actually excuse me. Um I think it's really it was a really interesting one because I didn't really know what to expect with it. 01:20.35 Ashleigh Airey I want to read that. So weirdly, it's on my Tpr. 01:35.91 archaeoteacup Um, but it's and this isn't spoilers but it's It's really interesting to read because they depict academic life. So well, even though it's from like a fantasy perspective like that it if you took away the fact that it was fantasy. It could be someone like going on an academic field trip which I thought was really clever. 01:54.22 Ashleigh Airey Um, that sounds very clever and I've heard good things. Good things about it. So yeah I did nothing Majorly like in fantasy now I'm reading Um, what the River knows. 01:55.52 archaeoteacup Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, it was a good. It was a fun one and what about you did you manage to get some reading done. 02:10.21 Ashleigh Airey Um, so I'm very excited and that's got fantasy elements in it with some magic and um and it's basically a mummy essentially and or close to it anyway. So I'm excited to finish that. But um I read a few I read 2 books I think with a crisp spirit so that wasn't too bad. 02:15.70 archaeoteacup Ah, oh live. 02:27.31 archaeoteacup There's yeah yeah, it's pretty good. It's pretty good. Yeah, nice. Yeah I actually got um the wheel of time ah book one because I've never read that and yeah I know well. 02:29.88 Ashleigh Airey Know. 02:36.78 Ashleigh Airey Ah, oh you're in for a long haul. Ah. 02:41.59 archaeoteacup Was also I was like Rob and I had literally had a conversation the day before about how I was you know bit sad that I couldn't read as much anymore because I never had the time and I always procrastinated in all this kind of thing that I opened up Christmas present to be at a black but really like just I just told you that I can't read much anymore and you give me the like a most epic. Like an eleven book series. Each book is like 500 pages. Yeah like oh yeah, well there you go. So we'll see if I ever get round to reading it but which I mean I'm sure that has so much stuff that we could dive into from an archaeological perspective. 03:02.21 Ashleigh Airey Um, it's going to take up so much of your life. Ah. 03:17.19 Ashleigh Airey Oh yeah, whole law like everything says magic systems like yeah I know of them I've got a friend that read them and I've really wanted to dive into it again I'm like. 03:18.86 archaeoteacup Do So Ah yeah, have you have you read them or you know of them more? yeah. 03:33.11 archaeoteacup Right? I mean just the look at this book which however, many maybe even five ten years ago I would have looked at this book and been like Hells yes, like this is my book I'm going to dive into this. It's thick. It's hefty. You know, but then ah yeah now now I'm just like oh gosh that's. 03:33.44 Ashleigh Airey Do I have the time. Ah. 03:42.77 Ashleigh Airey Um, yeah. 03:48.59 Ashleigh Airey I know and I've seen like the Amazon prime like Tv show. But apparently it's deviates so much from the books. So I don't know I don't know but I will pick it a one day one day maybe we'll read it on here. You know. 03:50.79 archaeoteacup Little intimidating right? That's a Tv show. Ah. 04:01.97 archaeoteacup Yeah, what one day that's right, That's very true. Well which leads so good at Segways because that Segways beautifully into something that we wanted to talk about so ah for the next year we are of course still going to be. 04:09.60 Ashleigh Airey I know. 04:19.70 archaeoteacup Doing more quests sometimes we're going to have some guests joining us on these quests depending on the topic by the way as always if anyone's listening and has some topics that they would like us to cover or some suggestions I mean you know we're we're very happy to to hear any any suggestions that you might have for us I'm always happy to. Take on feedback as well. If you can you know, let us know what you think of the podcast. Um you can check on our Instagram for example I think actually you can also now comment directly on like the podcast streaming services where you are and we should get some kind of notification I'm not sure how that works though. But anyway, ah. 1 thing that we are also hoping to introduce this year is live recordings which how do you feel about that. Ah. 05:01.60 Ashleigh Airey And scared Thanks I did but scared. 05:07.50 archaeoteacup be fun. It'll be fun. It'll be fun. Um, so I'll ah I'll just talk a little bit about it because I'm the one who's trying to organize these life of heads basically with the archeology podcast network we're trying to organize more regular live podcast recordings with all of our shows. Um, and yeah, so of course we are part of the archeology podcast network but we thought rather than just do like 1 of our standard shows. It would be fun to do something a little bit different. Um, you know, especially for the live show something that maybe requires a little less ah scripting I suppose you could say. Which so that's what we're trialing today and as you can see. It's going beautiful and not rambling on at all I mean actually we doing pretty well um, but ah so we thought we do a read alone? Yeah, so not a wheel of time. 05:50.60 Ashleigh Airey Vitively. 05:56.60 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, no, no I think we'd be here forever if we did that yeah it would be I was just thinking that. Yeah. 06:04.63 archaeoteacup I mean that would be a whole podcast series in itself right? It just reading that there probably is one out there. Yeah because there's there's a couple of cool other ones that I have followed. there's a um well there's a discord discord Discorld ah podcast I now can't remember the name of it where they read. They sort of cover a book every every episode as you know I'm very obsessed with see even even in this episode managedish is sneak get death well disbel sorry have have you heard about the word of discwoodd. Um, oh sorry, just drop the piece. 06:28.37 Ashleigh Airey But every time anytime I talk to you tilly. It's just but. 06:39.50 Ashleigh Airey Um. 06:42.78 archaeoteacup Um, but yes, so ah, that may do one and I know that for example, there's a readalong of the lord of the rings books that is done through Instagram I can't remember now as well. The name of the person if I find these I will put them in the show notes so that you can have a look and see them. 1 podcast that I quite enjoy is called pot of prejudice where they read read the Jane Austen book say good, fun. Um, and so that was sort of what inspired me a little bit as well to suggest the idea and ash was on board straight away because we realize we both have so much time to read. But. 07:00.84 Ashleigh Airey Yes I like them. 07:11.56 Ashleigh Airey I want it? Well busy asshole. 07:18.17 archaeoteacup No, no, no, not at all, not at all. But although out of curiosity. What is your average like read rate. Would you say. 07:24.35 Ashleigh Airey Oh I do I've never kind of measured it I've just started to even like engage with good reads again. So we'll see how it goes but I mean. 07:31.29 archaeoteacup Okay, this is. 07:36.37 Ashleigh Airey It depends I go through stages of I'm very much a mood reader So like I will get really engrossed in something and then I'll keep reading and then I'll be like okay well I've got this I Really want this very specific book and I will try and find it and then I'll read it and then I'll continue on that but I don't know what about you. 07:37.88 archaeoteacup The. 07:48.81 archaeoteacup Yeah, ah. 07:54.95 archaeoteacup I Have realized that I can just about handle the one book a month for Archo Book Club Um, which we'll get to later one second I just need a cough right? I'm sorry. Um so you know and then I have though. 08:05.54 Ashleigh Airey Nice cost. 08:11.71 archaeoteacup Made a new year's resolution with myself to try and read more books because I think my problem is like in the evening and stuff if I do have a bit of time I just sort of collapse on the sofa and either squirrel on my phone or watch something or you know maybe try and read but then fall asleep or something or you know the baby cries or something like that. So. I'm determined to try and just during the day as well. Just you know when I have 5 minutes and I'm making a cup of tea rather than scrolling on my phone I'm going to read instead I think right? we'll see. We'll see how it goes. But yeah I mean which. 08:38.21 Ashleigh Airey That is a big goal. Yeah, but it also doesn't allow distraction. 08:49.32 archaeoteacup Have a lot of my household. So. 08:50.94 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, it's good to say I mean no not, you're distracted or anything to leave but like you have a lot going on in your life like so ah. 08:55.89 archaeoteacup But know well but I thought as well I was thinking about this and this is maybe a little deep for it. But like I think so much nowadays we're you know, looking at our phone and I work a lot from my phone. So a lot of the time where I'm on my phone I'm actually doing work I'm not just scrolling. But then you think oh my you know I have. To young kids and and they're seeing you even though we try not to be on our phones all the time you know, but still, they'll see you doing stuff on your phone a lot more and I'm like I love reading and I do read just they don't then see that as much because I usually do it when they're asleep. You know. 09:30.28 Ashleigh Airey And. 09:32.46 archaeoteacup They're in bed or something so I was like I should read more and we read with them and they love reading but like yeah so that was also a little bit I guess the ah bit of the inspiration behind it I Thought maybe even if I'm not even if I have to reread the the page again that evening. But at least I'm showing like look this is something fun that we do. When we have a pause in our day. Yeah. 09:51.44 Ashleigh Airey So do you read? Do you do you prefer books like actual physical copies or do you have it prefer Kindle reading or like Ebook readers. 10:00.46 archaeoteacup Um. 10:01.63 archaeoteacup I think it depends so I I do really love the physical books and you can have nice bookmarks and everything. But then I have a Kindle which I bought because I was traveling around a lot when I was at Uni and. Is so useful to just be able to have I now have that in my handbag. So if I'm out somewhere and then I have you know a doctor disap appointment I'm in the waiting room or something I'll read on the Kindle rather than reading on the phone then you know because I don't like reading on my phone and I don't like reading on the screens but the Kindle sort of okay I do really like audiobooks though I listen a lot to audiobooks as well. 10:21.16 Ashleigh Airey And. 10:34.82 archaeoteacup Um, which is quite useful because you can just have them on in the background while you're doing stuff. But what about you. 10:40.60 Ashleigh Airey Um, yeah I'm a bit of mixed media as well I like I like I'd probably say I read more physical books but I do love my E reader. Um so much and ah yeah. 10:52.90 archaeoteacup Ah, yes. 10:55.96 Ashleigh Airey Plus it's like it hides a all manner of sentence doesn't I like all different. Yeah yeah. 10:57.60 archaeoteacup Exactly well I was about to say the kind of books the jury and I can imagine. Yeah also just for example, this wheel of timebook is so massive that actually just having a little kindle. Version of it. You know, rather than this huge tome that you have to cart around with you everywhere is probably more useful so also for a lot of fantasy books I think having a Kindle budget's good. 11:20.59 Ashleigh Airey I Think that's it's that's quite like conspicuous consumption isn't it archeology and about you know, like having a big book in your purse just like pulling out of your bag mean like look at me I am reading this. It's a statement. 11:29.44 archaeoteacup True even though you've got like hidden like a little magazine inside of something the classic right. 11:42.84 Ashleigh Airey Um, yeah, like nice see. Yeah yeah, well yeah, totally, that's why you get the Kindles silly. 11:48.70 archaeoteacup There's my smut book in the inside of inside pages I did what book was it some horrendous smart book I think it might have even been 50 shades a grey or something and you know there was so much hype about it and I was like I have to read this? Well it wasn't even I have to read this. It was more. 11:59.80 Ashleigh Airey Class. 12:07.38 archaeoteacup What is the big deal about this book that everyone's going on about. Um so I downloaded the sample of my Kindle and the first bit up until the end of the sample nothing really happens but I was like oh it's basically like a twilight fan fit you know thing. Ah I could do with a fun silly read right now. Sure I'll download it and I was on the train. And I was reading it and I got to like the first scene where stuff starts happening I was like my god what and it was the whole thing of like my goodness I'm reading this all my kind and no one's looking over my shoulder but I was there like oh my god I mean like. 12:34.74 Ashleigh Airey Ah. 12:39.36 Ashleigh Airey Well this is the this is the problem actually that happened with 50 shades degree in the romance genre right? is that 50 shades degree got so popular I don't know why but it did um and it it ruined the discreete cover so look any romance like erotic a sort book like that. 12:44.95 archaeoteacup That. 12:51.45 archaeoteacup Yes. 12:57.85 archaeoteacup And no one knows. 12:57.96 Ashleigh Airey They have a discrete cover on them and that's the whole point is that you can wave your smutty flag high on a bus and nobody knows but not everybody knows and so now you've got these kind of cartoon covers and stuff. So it's changed the way that the romance has been seen actually like in society. 13:12.20 archaeoteacup The. 13:16.31 Ashleigh Airey It's quite interesting. But yeah, you wouldn't have to have a Kindle because they wouldn't know what you were reading? No it is good. Oh no I can't know no I can't I can't do it to a book like a physical book I can't do. 13:23.27 archaeoteacup Ah, for that is kind of useful with the kid. But no I do like Kindles but I do also enjoy the the physical books. Do you agitate when you read? No yeah. 13:35.61 Ashleigh Airey I would sometimes maybe highlight but I'm not a big highlighter I've seen a lot of people on Instagram like with the nice pastel highlighters highlighting everything and like it's just a mirage of color at that point rather than actual words on the page but I can't bear it like I just can't I remember an old teacher of mine. 13:40.27 archaeoteacup Ah, yeah. 13:44.98 archaeoteacup Using this. 13:54.25 Ashleigh Airey Ah, old history teacher as well told me that the best thing that she ever did every night for oh god um was that she'd have a glass of red wine and she'd sit with her pen and she'd read a historical novel and she'd like write notes in the margins and stuff that's unlike torture to me I was like I can't do that oh god no I can't do it. They're so precious. But can I can even I can do like a folding of the page slightly at the top I know. But yeah dog get you've been thinking about something else to like. Ah. 14:16.41 archaeoteacup Oh you do the dog and no, whats it call not dog and doggie dog to get something else. Yeah oh is that and is how I didn't even know there was useful this something. Yeah I was thinking of a cigarette. 14:30.99 Ashleigh Airey No I'm joking. Ah I just 50 She slight joke like um, no, ah yeah, sure tell they sure till he's like it's I've got like. 14:34.92 archaeoteacup Oh really, oh like I said I only read the first 20 pages and then was like oh my god and I too it was a bit much for me. 14:47.80 Ashleigh Airey He's got about a thousand copies of 50 14:49.68 archaeoteacup Ah, my favorite those stories there was a Graham Norughton episode and there was they were they had Jamie Dawnan on who you know plays what's his name in the in the films and they did a gray I assume I can't remember what his first name is um, that's ah and they asked you know how many women have fred. 14:55.76 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, what's his name like you don't know I. 15:09.60 archaeoteacup The book and like nanny all the women put their hands up that he's like how many men and 1 guy at the back put his hand up and they were going. Oh you know did did you enjoy them and he said no, they're short and and then great blood was like har you notice he said they he read more than let's just make sure they're really sh you know. 15:21.89 Ashleigh Airey But yeah. 15:27.92 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, totally and also like he maybe he likes them and that's fine. Yeah. 15:29.22 archaeoteacup Ah. 15:33.54 archaeoteacup That inspired that's totally fine. Anyway, we've got slightly off track. Um, you were talking about annotations and well, but ah ah, let's have a quick pause We refresh ourselves have a have aip of water carve ourselves set and then. 15:41.31 Ashleigh Airey Yes, Greg Bos 15:49.55 archaeoteacup We'll come when we come back, We'll be telling you what we are going to be reading and our exciting new read along.
