00:00.00 archaeoteacup Hello and welcome back. Okay, so it turns out the books did actually want to tell us a few things specifically about vampires. 00:09.70 Ashleigh Airey They were incredibly informative. Um, but books aside I Want to know first and foremost tilly Jess What do you guys know about vampires. 00:19.80 archaeoteacup Well I know about the prayers from what I've read in a series which I don't know if I've told you guys about this series. Um of books that I've read and I mean they just. Ah. 00:30.85 Ashleigh Airey Twilight I knew it has to be tilly's favorite book series. Yeah sparkle. 00:33.96 Jess Twi Hard had to be. 00:40.11 Jess Um, they sparkle right. 00:41.39 archaeoteacup Yeah, so weirdly enough there are vampires in discourse. But but unfortunately I mean I know I knew about vampires before from various things in terms of the good old. You know they drink blood. Um, they've got pointy teeth and um. 00:56.12 Ashleigh Airey Um, had. 00:57.70 archaeoteacup But then yeah the problem is now I think I've read the Dis World book So many times that that's kind of in great stuff I mind now the visit baies from there which they basically play into the stereotype so they always dress in evening wear and they always have like slick tear and all this kind of stuff. Um, so yeah, yeah, right, The cape exactly there's even. 01:10.48 Jess And the offer cape. 01:12.23 Ashleigh Airey Oh my God yeah. 01:17.80 archaeoteacup 1 of my favorite characters is called ot shrik who's a who's a vampire and he he's a photographer but he has so he has like a photographer's best, but it has tails and a bow tie as well like it's so yeah, but so so I don't know like I feel like. Yeah, that's sort of a nighttime. They can't go out the sun but that's sort of as much as I know but I feel like Jess is probably a little more aware vampire ah kind of in popular fiction then and in mythology and things because she's the one that introduced me to quite a lot of ah umpire related fiction. 01:50.13 Ashleigh Airey Oh. 01:52.95 Jess Um, I mean there is a lot and I like what's interesting is that the like vampire myth has evolved so drastically I speak I feel like especially like in recent media. There's like different. 01:59.70 Ashleigh Airey Um. 02:05.30 Jess Like lore about them like you know in the buffy universe there. They like you know if you stake them they poof turn into dust and if you like and um, oh in ah Discw world. You know his? ah photographer's flashb turns him into dust. 02:21.93 archaeoteacup Yes, true and he has to have a little pile of blood around his neck so that it smashes on it and it blossoms him off again because otherwise people keep having to find blood everywhere to get him back to life. Ah, right. 02:23.72 Jess And then he has to lick Sophie chick. 02:33.00 Jess I. 02:33.88 Ashleigh Airey Ah, what a profession to choose. 02:37.15 archaeoteacup That's what they keep saying to him. He's like but light is my passion. Ah. 02:38.60 Ashleigh Airey Oh. 02:43.00 Jess Um, well and then there's like ah there's the vampire diaries where they like hire a witch so that they can go out in the sunlight but then they like sort of like if they're stak they desiccate. 02:55.71 archaeoteacup Um, oh o. 02:56.27 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, they have the rings don't they have like a ring. Yeah yeah, well, that's that's a good seggue because we've talked about like popular fiction but the kind of traditional definition of a vampire I'll tell you what it is right? Okay, yeah. 02:57.95 Jess And so they like almost like mummify. Yeah, no, very. 03:11.50 archaeoteacup But thanks, thanks that. 03:13.68 Jess Um, please do. 03:15.46 Ashleigh Airey So a vampire is a mythical creature that survives ah by feeding on the essence of the living This is often framed as blood but it can be more ephemeral like a life essencecent or even a life essence. So ariescence there said or even emotions. 03:26.59 archaeoteacup Ah, her. 03:32.62 Ashleigh Airey So You like if you've ever seen what we do in the shadows. There's the kind of um, ah vampiric kind of guy who's in the office and he's an energy vampire so that um and then in European folklore vampires are undead creatures that often visit loved ones from Beyond the grave and cause Mischief or. Death in areas. They've inhabited when they were alive. 03:53.95 archaeoteacup Which I guess makes sense that idea of it being like it's not always blood because if you say like oh they're a bit of a vampire that it's like isn't that a saying like oh they're a bit of a vampire. They kind of suck the life out of you like they they sort of yeah take drain your energy. 04:04.75 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, yeah, and then you get. 04:07.10 Jess Yeah I think that I think the term energy vampire is still used as like to refer to like really extroverted people who like always claim the spotlight but you feel exhausted being around them. 04:20.48 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, they just like somehow suck your energy if you you like how are you so energetic. Yeah, like stop completely or like you haven't had your coffee in the morning and you're like please stop singing like. 04:20.74 archaeoteacup O. 04:25.20 Jess Um, to supply theirs. Yeah toddlers. Yeah I was going to say children I think children are a little energy though. Birth. 04:31.15 archaeoteacup I was about to say think I live with two little vampires right now like how do you have still have so much energy bear. 04:36.64 Ashleigh Airey I. 04:42.34 Jess And. 04:43.25 Ashleigh Airey Ah, and I think where the kind of blood comes into it is it becomes especially when you know Bram Stoker he writes Dracula it becomes a idea of sex. So the the fangs and penetration and then blood is yeah so all that sort of stuff. 04:54.24 archaeoteacup Ah, ah, hall. 04:59.63 Ashleigh Airey But there's actually the the notion of vamperism has existed in many forms and and for many different cultures for centuries even Millennia so there's some cool archaeological and mythological vampire examples. You can talk about so I don't know if you've heard of um. 05:08.84 Jess A. 05:10.30 archaeoteacup Ah, like folklore now. 05:17.81 Ashleigh Airey The mesopotamian blood drinking Demon Lamas you no yeah, it does doesn't it so they all kind of interconnect all these kind of mythologicalic mythological features and peak creatures and things and but so there's. 05:21.47 archaeoteacup Ah I mean that sounds yeah, pretty blood drinking sounds pretty pretty vamporistic to me. 05:23.75 Jess He sounds cool. 05:37.50 Ashleigh Airey Lamasho. She's the daughter of the sky god a new. Um, there's depictions of pottery like actual pieces of pot of blood drinking demons. Um that relate to her and her her children. So this then interconnects with you kind of jewish um, mythological figure of Lilith. 05:53.16 archaeoteacup Oh. 05:55.10 Ashleigh Airey Who in the early medieval period becomes known as the first wife of Adam um, who doesn't want to marry Adam which is fair and who would and then decides that she's going to actually become the mother of demons and yeah I mean. 06:01.96 Jess Wi. 06:06.93 archaeoteacup That sounds like much more fun. Yeah. 06:11.61 Ashleigh Airey Either marry bore an old Adam and become part of his rib or something and then oh become the queen of demons like sounds better. Um, yeah, right? like. 06:14.00 archaeoteacup Ah, it's that I feel like in Greek mythology. There was something vamporitic that I had seen somewhere. 06:18.73 Jess Um I like the power act concept there that just sounds nice. 06:31.18 archaeoteacup But I would because I remember being surprised when I saw it and I was like here like really they can found pires an ancient greece because that just seems so out of place for me. Let me. Okay. 06:38.70 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, there's um la meer who is like a sneak. Well she's a woman who is um whose children are killed because they are Zeus's children um by Hera because she loves doing math. 06:51.74 archaeoteacup Ah, because yeah I mean the amount of stuff she had to put up with to be fair like that might be. 06:54.60 Ashleigh Airey Um. 06:55.19 Jess Um, she loves a jealous rage. 06:59.45 Ashleigh Airey Um, you might have also heard of the the poem Le meer as well and it's kind of like she's like a snake entity and then she swears vengeance and basically Prays on the blood of mothers and babies which is somewhat counterintuitive. Actually if you think about it because her children were slaughtered. 07:14.30 archaeoteacup Back up and. 07:16.30 Ashleigh Airey Um, and but most of these early vampiric figures are women who target other mothers and babies. 07:20.94 archaeoteacup I mean we've spoken before on this podcast. How like people who did mythology in the early days of folklore just didn't seem to like women for some reason I know right? So bizarre. 07:30.20 Jess What that's crazy. 07:31.38 Ashleigh Airey No, that's so weird. It's like we live in a patarch society. Well, ah. 07:35.39 Jess Women maligned. 07:41.74 archaeoteacup Ah, we have the title of our podcast wibb but light did ridiculous for yeah but are these and like when it's because and it's just such a. 07:41.82 Jess Never women maligned a pod gap. 07:44.17 Ashleigh Airey Yes, but a podcast. 07:53.50 Jess So. 08:00.00 archaeoteacup Visual I mean is that visual of the of the kind of because all of these mythologies at all of these folklores are definitely a lot more removed I suppose visually from what we would think of when we depict a vampire I mean I guess we need to fit papa think of someone more kind of european I guess so like more. You know it's like the pale skin and the dark hair and the the evening dress and you know all of that kind of thing so it is that did that's also start early on or is that something that's just happened because of Bras Stoker's novel. 08:32.25 Ashleigh Airey Well weirdly enough actually and vampires were a major source of anxiety in medieval and early modern Europe and like actually documented that people were worried about vampires at the time. Um, so you have chronicle as like. 08:38.69 archaeoteacup Okay, so oh I mean. 08:49.26 Ashleigh Airey And the Twelfth Century Chronicler and William of Newberg who who basically records these rise in vampire like sightings and called revenants which are different so they ah rise from the grave and and do the same thing kind of thing they go about the day or they'll go and terrorize their. Loved ones so the light knock on the door and they'll come in and they won't know it's the book I like wow, you're alive amazing and then they'll go oh but that dripping blood from their mouth and the their hairs grown longer and then niils are really long by now. 09:10.13 archaeoteacup And. 09:22.18 archaeoteacup Classic Barb really just always like to play those games. Yeah. 09:26.46 Jess But really let himself go. 09:28.24 Ashleigh Airey Like yeah I really did like what's with the rotting flesh Bob and but you also have even into the the seventeenth century as well. You've got a monk called Antonine Augustine chamet who records reports of literally and inter dead noisily feeding on their own flesh within their griefs so they were just so hungry and needing blood that they were just gnaw on themselves. Essentially. 09:48.69 archaeoteacup Oh oh. 09:50.39 Jess Man. 10:01.68 archaeoteacup Ah, okay, oh. 10:02.57 Jess Delete. 10:03.82 Ashleigh Airey And then you get even in the eighteenth century you get vampire attacks happening as well and so they become extremely frequent in um and East Prussia and the habsburg. Um, there's 2 major incidents. 10:10.33 archaeoteacup Ah. 10:18.64 Ashleigh Airey From the is 1720 s to the 1730 s where like literally they are seeing the walking dead common wild and consuming the blood of the of the living he is it blood. 10:31.15 archaeoteacup Oh gosh and which I mean I guess that's sort of where still quite Europe based I mean Jess you're you're based across the pond as we say um, do how that. 10:31.79 Jess Um, is it vard. Um. 10:43.22 Ashleigh Airey You think. 10:43.86 Jess Um, is under the colonists. 10:48.30 archaeoteacup We've already spoken about surprising amount of mummies being in the Us. But what about what about vampires was that also a thing in the Us. 10:54.18 Jess It was so in new england specifically which is where I'm from um there was a vampire panic quote unquote in the ah eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and so it really stemmed from tuberculosis. 11:06.47 archaeoteacup Um. 11:10.18 Jess Ah, which was rampant at the time and so the first member of the family to die. Um, they would have no connection between their death and then the future deaths of family members because of course you know the person with tuberculosis is like sick in bed and everybody's crowded around and like breathing in. 11:25.29 archaeoteacup Yeah. 11:28.31 Jess The same air delightful and they're like oh no, they've died and it's not that we've been past this disease or this bacterium. It's that they are coming back from the grave and sucking the life out of us because the the typical signs of consumption are being super pale. And you know you're wasting away and so it's just it's consuming you from the inside which is why they called it. Consumption. Um, and so ah, there's like specific records. Um in Rhode Island I think where people would dig up the first met family member to die and check if there's um, fresh blood. In their body and if they were they would burn the heart and then give the ashes of the burned heart to the ah dying family members as like a great lovely sounding cure which obviously did nothing um, but. 12:14.12 archaeoteacup Um, oh you great? Um, so that really helped with the infection. 12:23.30 Ashleigh Airey Um. 12:25.74 Jess Yeah, no I don't think charred heart is really going to be the thing but um, that was their theory. Um, there was other There's also archeological record from new england where people would be buried ah inverted or um. If. They were already skeletonized by the time they figured out who the first person who died was they would rearrange the the skeleton so like ah the leg bone like the femurs would be crossed on the chest with the skull on top like a squill and crossbones. 12:55.70 archaeoteacup Her co. 12:56.92 Ashleigh Airey Oh. 12:59.90 Jess Um, or the skull would be placed in between the feet basically anything that would keep them from coming back from the grave which I. 13:03.65 Ashleigh Airey You know it just makes me wonder like how did they know what the vampire looked like so would it would it would be because of the pale skin and the consumption looking esqueness. How would they figure that out. 13:18.68 Jess I I mean other than I have no idea because I don't There's no records of like them seeing the previously deceased person so they're just like oh they must be coming back from the grave and sucking the life force out of these people. 13:27.79 archaeoteacup The. 13:36.66 Jess And so like there's rumor that um Bram Stoker got some of his inspiration from the New England Vampire Panic because he was on tour with some theater company at the time. Um, other people think the timelines don't quite allowing up because he wrote it for 7 years but um 13:42.40 archaeoteacup Now I'm and know. 13:45.43 Ashleigh Airey Yeah. 13:54.10 Jess I think it's Mina Harker right who um who starts like wasting away when Dracula comes and visits her and so it's like a similar concept so rather than like having this image of a vampire I think they had more of a concept of like energy being stolen if that makes sense. Yes. 14:07.38 archaeoteacup Oh yeah, look right off her. 14:09.75 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, yeah, that makes sense. 14:12.85 Jess Yeah. 14:17.90 Jess So I don't know how any ah how we discovered what vampires should look like but it sounds like um, some people think that they should be you know, bloated and dead and creepy. 14:28.43 archaeoteacup Yeah, that's very different from like my image of a but. 14:28.94 Ashleigh Airey So like yeah yeah, like you already said, tilly they they look European with long hair. But you said yeah so like for me a vampire now I mean back a historical vampire is. 14:36.65 archaeoteacup Ah, yeah, like not bloated in consumptive. 14:40.97 Jess Is um, stylish counts. 14:48.50 Ashleigh Airey Literally a corpsse isn't it really? but then now if you look at the modern media and fancy media around vamperes that they hot like my good luck in people. 14:48.15 archaeoteacup So. 14:54.29 Jess Yes. 14:54.64 archaeoteacup Yeah, yeah, yeah, and even if they're not before they become a vampire they miraculously become good looking like after. 15:01.38 Ashleigh Airey Yeah, like Bella ones I believe becoming super hot. Yeah. 15:07.30 Jess Ah. 15:08.50 archaeoteacup Which I also like that they're like oh look now she's good looking and you're like oh great Yeah, because before she was a complete troll like it's but yeah, yeah, right? Oh she's cut her fringe. She's straightened her hair and she's taken her glasses off oh my god. 15:17.63 Jess Yeah, a look she took up her glasses. Um. 15:18.68 Ashleigh Airey Oh my God that's been to be fair to be fair though and someone who has to constantly wear glasses I would definitely tend into a vampire just for good eyesight. So yeah. 15:27.19 archaeoteacup Suddenly. 15:31.25 Jess Oh for sure same here. 15:35.26 archaeoteacup Oh there's books flying around again. 15:37.13 Ashleigh Airey Um, I'm god is there. Oh god they're so active today. What have you been feeding them tilly. 15:45.80 archaeoteacup I I don't know just some bookw worms. Oh got one of them just tried to eat my hair hang on to say okay I'm really sorry everyone we're gonna have to cut short this episode of and my trial but don't you worry we haven't finished.
