Ashleigh Airey is an archaeologist, heritage communicator, and podcast host whose work explores how we connect with the past through material culture, sensory experience, and storytelling. With an MA in Archaeology and History and an MLitt in Material Culture and Artefact Studies from the University of Glasgow, she has a background in UK commercial archaeology and a particular interest in accessible, public-facing heritage work.
Ashleigh is the founder of AshWood Candles, a creative project that transforms archaeological research into scent-based interpretations of historic sites. Her candles are inspired by excavation reports, artefact assemblages, and the atmospheres of ancient places—blending academic insight with creative design.

She also co-hosts two podcasts on the Archaeology Podcast Network, both deeply nerdy in the best way:
And My Trowel (with Dr Tilly Siebrecht) is where fantasy worlds collide with archaeological theory. Dragons? Sacred landscapes? Ghosts reclaiming their bodies? They’ve got a trowel for that.
The Archaeo Book Club (with Dr Tilly Siebrecht and Judith Franks) is a monthly show for anyone who loves heritage, history, and a good read. Born from their online Discord community, the podcast mixes personal reflections, critical discussion, and book recommendations you didn’t know you needed.
Ashleigh is passionate about widening access to archaeology—whether through smell, storytelling, or meaningful conversation.
