Dr Matilda Siebrecht - also known as Tilly - is an archaeologist and journalist, who one day decided to combine her love of the past with her love of communicating and the rest is (pre)history!
Matilda's research background has focused on northern cultures, including research projects looking at Viking metalworking in Iceland, Neolithic amber beads from Northwest Europe, and organic material culture from Paleo-Inuit sites in Arctic Canada. Her specialism is in artefact analysis and material culture studies, specifically microscopic analysis looking at how objects in the past were made and used. Alongside her work at a Germany-based commercial archaeology firm, Matilda is a freelance analyst with her own company (LAMA), a part-time lecturer in archaeology and anthropology at Groningen University in the Netherlands, and the Director and Membership Manager of the international society for experimental archaeology and open-air museums (EXARC).
Matilda Siebrecht
Thanks to her experience in journalism, Matilda became involved in science communication alongside her PhD, which led her to create The Archaeologist's Teacup - a platform spread across social media, blogs, and podcasts - where she shares her love of ancient objects in a fun and educational way. This platform has allowed her to create content for blogs and magazines, offer workshops and seminars in science communication and public outreach, and collaborate with companies such as World Virtual Tours and Adventuress Archaeology Magazine. She also founded the Archaeo Book Club - an online community for lovers of archaeology and books - to explore how archaeology is depicted in popular media.
