Mac delves into his formative years, working in Wyoming and his inspiration to take the next step into graduate school. We also discuss his current PhD research and how we can identify and look at childhood in the archaeological record. We then end the episode with a discussion about problems found in field schools and the ramifications of those problems to Mac’s academic career.

If a Yoda, Archaeology had: A Philosophical Discussion with our Mentor Dr. Robert L. Kelly - Ep 27
On Episode 27 of A Life in Ruins Podcast, we interview Dr. Robert L. Kelly. Dr. Kelly was all the cohosts thesis advisor at the University of Wyoming. Dr. Robert L. Kelly wrote the book, The Lifeways of Hunter-Gatherers: The Foraging Spectrum, on hunter-gatherer archaeology and the mathematical proofs behind it.
He was involved in early research at Gatecliff Rockshelter and then he continued on to influence archaeological theory for the rest of his career. He writes a regular textbook with Dr. David Hurst Thomas named “Archaeology” (latest edition).
He has also written a book on the future of archaeology called The Fifth Beginning.
We have a super interesting philosophical conversation about archaeology and its meaning. Bob recounts his early life and how he found his way out in the desert with David Hurst Thomas during his first days as an archaeologist.
We then discuss his transition from Cornell to the University of New Mexico and the University of Michigan, and have a lengthy discussion about his mentor, Lewis Binford and his eccentric life.
The majority of the podcast however, is an in-depth conversation about anthropology, how the field has changed over the years, and what it means to be human.

Our Ruined Lives with Alex Craib - Ep 26
On this episode of Our Ruined lives, we giggle and chat with our good friend Alex Craib. Alex is a PhD student at the University of Wyoming studying under the same professor as all the cohosts did. We start off by delving through Alex’s career so far in archaeology and then get into a ridiculous series of stories about fieldwork with David, Connor and Carlton. We finish it out by having an intense discussion about mental health in academia and in archaeology specifically. We really hope everyone enjoys this episode!

In this episode we interview Dr. Erick Robinson from Utah State University. The hosts met Dr. Robinson while he was a post-doc under Dr. Robert Kelly at the University of Wyoming. A Life in Ruins Anniversary - Ep 22
Our first two episodes released on May 13th, 2019. Since that time we've released 21 episodes and have become one of the most popular podcasts on the APN. In this episode, we talk about our utter amazement to not having been forced off-air, how the podcast came to be, and how each of the hosts was inspired to become archaeologists. We would like to thank our listeners and followers for all of their support and look forward to another year of A Life In Ruins Podcast.

Of Padawans and Paleoindians: A Conversation with Dr. Shane Miller - Ep 21
Dr. D. Shane Miller is not your average southern boy. Rather, he is one of the more accomplished archaeologists in the country for his age, and currently is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology and Middled Eastern Cultures at Mississippi State University.
Shane started his career at the University of Tennessee where he got his undergraduate and his master’s degree conducting his thesis at the Topper Site.
He later completed his PhD at the University of Arizona, and unfortunately, helped direct a field school in Nashville, Tennessee in which David was a young student. There is always a Sith and his master.
We talk about Shane‘s career, some fun field stories, and have an interesting discussion about the field of anthropology in general. It was a blast.

Part II- All We Are Is Donny Dust in the Wind - Ep 18.2
Our hosts Carlton and David interview primitive survival expert Donny Dust about his prehistoric tool kit and his strategies for surviving in the bush. Donny was a contestant on the History Channel Show 'Alone' season 6 and 'Alone: The Beast' season 1. He is also the author of several books including Earthroamer and Scavenger: A Primal Approach to Lifestyle Change. He also runs his own primitive survival school called Paleo Tracks Survival.
Halfway through the interview, our hosts and guest are joined by Devin Pettigrew. Devin is a Ph.D. student at CU Boulder researching ancient weapons technology and ballistics. He joins in on the interview to provide a more dynamic and academic discussion regarding Donny's experiences and knowledge. AKA nerding out over cool stuff.

Carson Black and Primatology - Ep 17
Today’s podcast guest is Carson Black, a graduate student at Central Washington University. Carson studies Primate Behavior and Ecology and is basically the next Jane Goodall. Carson did her undergraduate degree in Biological Anthropology at Colorado State University in Fort Collins (GO BUFFS). She wrote her senior thesis on Mantled howler monkey and sexual dimorphism in their feeding posture! Carson did primatology fieldwork in Costa Rica, archaeological and paleontological fieldwork in Northwest and Central Wyoming. She is super passionate about anthropology and other social topics. So get your howler monkeys howling and prepare for a poop-slinging episode of A Life of Ruins Podcast.

Our Ruined Lives with Lana Ruck - Ep 16
Today’s podcast hostage is Lana...Lana...Lanaaaaaaa Ruck. Lana is a dual Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Anthropology and Cognitive Science Program at Indiana University, Bloomington. She works at Olduvai Gorge as a student researcher at the Stone Age Institute, and she is an avid science communicator through IU's science blog, ScIU (@sciublog).
Lana is a proud Texan, and got her B.A. in Anthropology at Texas Tech University and her M.A. at Florida Atlantic University. She has worked in Ecuador, Nicaragua, and Tanzania, focusing on stone tool technologies and toolmaking techniques. Lana is an interdisciplinary scientist and self-described "stone age neuroscientist."
Her research combines brain imaging techniques with experimental archaeology to explore how our uniquely-human system of technology, language, and cognition evolved. Unfortunately, Lana allowed Carlton to be one of her participants for her dissertation research, and we are very excited to spill the tea on how that disaster went.
