My Appearance on “Wired Support: Archaeology”: Behind the Scenes - Pseudo 123
Last month, I had the great fortune of appearing on “WIRED Tech Support: Archaeology.” This YouTube video is about 15 minutes long, and I spend it answering the most common archaeology questions from Twitter. It is hosted on the WIRED channel, and the channel’s massive popularity allowed me to reach over 240K people so far since it’s release in July. Some of the questions dealt with Pseudoarchaeology, and some of my answers did not go over well with the Graham Hancock crowd! Shocking!
This week, I’d like to talk about what it’s like behind the scenes when filming something like this, and also have a bit of fun with some of the most common criticisms I got from the Pseudoarchaeology crowd. Get ready to fight back against people who never listen in the first place!

David Teaches Science Media 101 - Ruins 169
On this episode, David is by himself and does not know what to talk about. So he rants and rambles about his dog lecture on youtube. Which then leads him to discussing how he edits videos, photos, and how he practices public speaking.
He talks about how he went from editing memes on photoshop to how he lights his cave scenes, and then talks about Oppenheimer and Tarentino movies and what makes them work. He then talks about how speeches and lectures are almost like standup comedy and how you can practice public speaking by making PowerPoints about what you love.

Vikings: myths, saga and reality - Digging Aliens 42
Vikings - many myths surround this era and the people of Scandinavia who lived during this time. Were they raiders, traders, or a bit in-between? Let's look into what a Viking was and what the word meant, and who could call themselves a Viking. As we will learn, it is less clear-cut than one might believe.
I will also talk about the Viking horned helmets. Are these accurate depictions? The answer might be surprising and have a strange connection to the Scandinavian Bronze Age.
Did the Vikings have tattoos, as in the famous TV show? What do we know about their body art? Is the Vegvisir a Viking symbol? And why should you make an appointment with your dentist instead of a tattoo artist to have the Viking look?
I'll also investigate why the sheep was one of the most important animals in Scandinavia and might have been the reason for the Viking raids and slavery. At last, we will learn that the Vikings might have based their society on their looks.
In Digging up Ancient Aliens, our host Fredrik uses his background in archaeology to discover what is genuine, fake, and somewhere in between in popular media, such as Ancient Aliens, Ancient Apocalypse, and many other places.

Changing Landscapes in Higher Education - HeVo 76
On today’s episode, Jessica welcomes back Dr. Jason Younker (Assistant Vice President and Advisor to the President on Sovereignty and Government-to-Government Relations at the University of Oregon and Chief of the Coquille Indian Tribe) on the podcast. Dr. Younker was a guest on Heritage Voices Episode 73 “Exploring the Ethics in Experimental Archaeology”, but Jessica invited him back because there was clearly so much more to discuss. In this episode, we talk about how Kennewick Man and the Coquille Tribal Council set him on his path in Anthropology and higher education.
We talk about the devastating effects of termination and the important distinction between diversity efforts and sovereignty. Finally we talk about his efforts in New York and Oregon to build relationships between Higher Education and Tribal Nations in order to improve higher education for Indigenous students. Even if you are an Arizona Wildcat like Jessica, this episode might just make you want to become an Oregon Duck!

Atlantis Reloded - Richat structure and the Jimmy Corsetti mistake - Digging Aliens 41
The Atlantis story may be one of the myths that have inspired numerous theories and speculations. But what happens if we apply a scientific approach to the story told by Plato in his works Timeaus and Critias? We open up the archaeologist's toolbox and a historical approach to the literary works of Plato. How does Plato's story hold up, and was he really trying to give us a literal account from a philosophical perspective?
While the Atlantis story has inspired writers such as Graham Hancock and David Childress, a new name has recently gotten much attention. Jimmy Corsetti is one of these personalities who claim to have found the actual location of this legendary city. According to Corsetti, the location is a location called the Richat structure. Is this true? What evidence can we find for and against this, and how well does this theory hold up in the end?
In Digging up Ancient Aliens, our host Fredrik uses his background in archaeology to discover what is genuine, fake, and somewhere in between in popular media, such as Ancient Aliens, Ancient Apocalypse, and many other places.

An interview on life in Colombia, academia with Margie Serrato, Ph.D. - Ruins 166
In this episode of A Life In Ruins podcast, David does a solo interview with his friend Dr. Margie Serrato, an anthropologist turned empowerment coach.
David and Margie begin talking about what Margie does for a living and her life post PhD. After, Margie discusses her childhood moving all over the US and also growing up in Medellin, Colombia during the height of Pablo Escobar’s narcoterrorism.
Margie then details her experience in academia, and why she decided to leave it. As well as appointment, discussion regarding psychology and culture, and how anthropology forces us to shift our perspectives.

A Teen with a Bracelet, Ancient Brazilians, and an Awful story about a Slave Ship - TAS 227
For some reason we have a Brazilian-themed show today…we start with the recovered skeletal remains of a teenager with a debilitating disease with an intricate bead bracelet. Then we look at an impossibly old site with jewelry made by very ancient Brazilians. Finally, we look at the discovery of a ship scuttled by a truly terrible person during the slave trade years.
