Cathars, lady Foixes, and the return to Rennes-le-château - Aliens 49

this time, I'm not alone! I have Ph.D. candidate Grace Rinehart Macrae, the Time Traveling Archaeologist, with me. We will learn more about the Cathars and one of their influential personalities, Esclarmonde of Foix. A woman who was very important among the Cathars and told to go back to the kitchen by the Dominican orders founder Saint Dominic. Esclarmonde did not to the saint's frustration. She also got known as the Fox due to her ability to avoid the Catholic inquisition.

Grace will also take us back to Rennes-le-château, where we will revisit and learn more about the buried treasure. Some additional information can be added to our documentation.

Gunung Padang Is Not A Pyramid: Does Anyone Double-Check Anything Anymore? - Pseudo 129

In today’s episode, I have rushed over to the microphone to give you a stern rebuttal to the current pseudoarchaeological silliness surrounding Gunung Padang, a non-pyramid (natural geological formation) located in Indonesia. Graham Hancock’s current pseudoscience abomination (the idea that this is indeed a super-old pyramid) has fooled more people than usual, helped tremendously by lazy reporting. The bummer with this one (which often happens) is that when it’s debunked, the debunking will not make the news, and I will have a generation of people asking me “But what about that pyramid in Indonesia?” - all thanks to the Graham Hancock Misinformation Machine.

The Intensive NAGPRA Summer Training and Education Program (INSTEP) - HeVo 79

On today’s episode, Jessica chats with Jayne-Leigh Thomas (NAGPRA Director at Indiana University) and Chance Ward (NAGPRA Coordinator for History Colorado [although speaking here on his experiences as a private citizen]; Lakota- Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe) about the first Intensive NAGPRA Summer Training and Education Program (INSTEP) held last summer in Indiana. We talk about where the idea for this NAGPRA training came from, how it was developed, and what it was like to be part of it. We also talked about how they might change the program for future years, as well as what the two of them would like everyone to know about NAGPRA and its implementation. There’s some really important NAGPRA advice and specific recommendations throughout this episode, including a segment where we discuss how to best approach TSA when working on NAGPRA repatriations.

A Burial of Weres and Wolves (part 1) - Trowel 4

For their next quest, Ash and Tilly need to call in some help, because they’ll be chatting all about werewolves. Luckily, they are joined by special guest David Ian Howe, an archaeologist who specializes in the relationships between ancient humans and dogs. Together, they will try to interpret the remains of what might be an ancient werewolf burial ground, talking along the way about deviant burials, perspectivism, and sheep that can drive cars. In fact, they’re chatting for so long, that this is only part 1! Part 2 will be released in two weeks.

Mummies, vampires, draugr, and aliens? - Digging Aliens 47

Halloween is soon upon us. Therefore, we will venture into the world of mummies, vampires, Camazotz, and draugr from an archaeological perspective. So we will look at how mummies became a medicine in Europe, the Book of the Dead, and the afterlife of Ancient Egypt. Then we will talk about the bat creature Camazotz, usually depicted with a knife and a human head in his hand. Lastly, we will discuss the draugr from Viking mythology. Was the draugr a ghost, undead, or something else, and what did the Vikings do to protect themselves from these creatures?

Are there any archeological records of these beings, and what can we say about them?
